Riverdale‘s tribute to late cast member Luke Perry is unlike any episode the show has done before. In fact, they even changed the format for it. The Season 4 premiere of The CW’s teen drama — airing Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 8/7c — is dedicated to Perry and his character Fred Andrews in the wake of Perry’s sudden death in March, and is “very much a standalone episode,” executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa tells TVLine. So much so that they ditched the standard “previously on” recap that precedes every episode of Riverdale: “After we finished the episode, everyone said, ‘You know what? You don’t really need that.'” The producers “also wanted a little bit of extra time, so we took out the ‘previously on’… We wanted to let the episode breathe a little.”

The CW has released the first images from Riverdale‘s season four premiere which also serves as a tribute episode to star Luke Perry, who passed away from a stroke in March. The hour, which airs Oct. 9 at 8pm E.T., will reveal how the series plans to deal with the passing of Perry’s Fred and looks to be highly emotional. In one of the most powerful shots, Archie (K.J. Apa) embraces his mother, Mary (Molly Ringwald), who is visibly upset. The other shots showcase the ensemble, including Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes), and Jughead (Cole Sprouse), in somewhat happier times.

Riverdale is back next month, and we have the first photos from the season premiere. Titled “Chapter Fifty-Eight: In Memoriam” the episode will serve as a loving tribute to the late Luke Perry, who played Archie’s father, Fred Andrews. It was announced as San Diego Comic Con that Perry’s 90210 co-star, Shannen Doherty would guest star on the episode. Many tears were shed at the panel, both during and after a tribute to Perry played to the Hall H crowd. The love on stage showed just how much Perry’s kindness affected and inspired his co-stars and how much he will be missed by the cast and audience alike. Before that emotional panel, the cast and crew talked to press about the coming season, and what how the premiere will honor Perry’s legacy, as well as Fred Andrew’s. “The loss of Fred I think brings a lot out in everyone,” KJ Apa, who plays Archie, explained. Archie won’t be the first teen on Riverdale to lose a parent – Cheryl and Betty both have dead fathers, but they were, let’s say, not very nice guys – but Fred Andrews had perhaps the most positive effects on those around him of any adult in Riverdale. The loss of Fred and the subsequent mourning will bring out “a lot of memories,” says Apa. But it will also highlight Fred’s legacy in his son. “I think it also explains why Archie is such a selfless person as well, because there’s so many stories being told about Fred.” Honoring how Archie’s goodness comes from his dad will also honor Perry’s own legacy among the cast. Riverdale producers made a very conscious choice last season to not address the loss of Fred on screen until they had time to truly do justice to the story, and honor Perry. Because Perry passed away during production, this meant shifting some of his final season three scenes and stories over to Archie’s mother Mary, played by Molly Ringwald. As season four gets underway, Ringwald will continue to have a major role in the series. “We’re finally going to dive deep into Archie’s relationship with Mary,” Apa explained, noting this was a “beautiful way to tell that story.”

EW has your exclusive first look at Shannen Doherty‘s appearance in the Oct. 9 premiere of Riverdale, a tribute to her beloved Beverly Hills, 90210 costar Luke Perry, who died of a stroke in March. In the above photo, Doherty’s character shares an emotional moment with Archie (KJ Apa), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Jughead (Cole Sprouse), and Betty (Lili Reinhart). “Shannen plays the person who tells us what happened to Fred,” explains showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. “She was there and she’s an unexpected source of comfort to Archie. A big piece of what happened to Fred comes to Archie through Shannen’s character. The scene is so heartbreaking because you really feel Shannen’s love for Luke.” Aguirre-Sacasa admits the days after Perry’s death were extremely challenging for the close-knit cast and crew. “It’s been really, really intense,” says the showrunner. “Luke and Fred were very similar guys. Everyone loved Fred. Everyone loved Luke. They were both salt of the earth. They were both generous and led with their heart. And it was really hard the days after Luke passed. I remember KJ took a break from filming and he went off and I sat with him and he said, ‘Gosh, Roberto, can you imagine if we were all as good people as Luke was?’ That sentiment really resonated and a similar sentiment is expressed in this first episode. Archie says to Veronica, ‘Imagine if we were all as good as my dad,’ and Veronica says, ‘You are.’ And it’s really cathartic.”

This season's tagline is, "Sex. Lies. Videotapes," hinting that there might be some crazy tapes out there that will be haunting our favorite classmates of Riverdale High. Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Cheryl, Toni, Kevin, and Reggie are all seen in the poster that looks like an old TV screen with its lighting settings all wrong. What could be on the tapes? And how did they manage to record them? Of course, if you put it all together, there's a chance that the show could be hinting that these characters might have made a sex tape (we sure hope not, cause that would be illegal) and other characters have been lying to someone on tape. It's important to note that most of the characters seem to be looking towards their right side, except for Jughead and Kevin, who are looking to the left, and Cheryl and Veronica who seem to be looking directly into the camera. Does this mean that we'll be seeing these characters in similar situations? Or are they showing different groups that will be paired up during the season and working together to go against everyone else? Either way, Riverdale fans are going to have to wait until October 9 to find out what happens next.
