Archie and the gang are bidding farewell to Luke Perry's character in the touching new Riverdale promo that was released during New York Comic Con on Sunday.
In the clip, Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Archie (KJ Apa) are at Pop's having breakfast and discussing going camping together before preparing for college. That's when Archie gets a phone call seemingly from his father, Fred Andrews (Perry). The next moment, he stands and drops his phone, then falls to his knees and his friends gather around.
"It hurts me that I never got to say goodbye," Archie explains in a voice-over as viewers get a fleeting glimpse at the funeral, which includes a photo of Perry surrounded by flowers.

Five of Perry's past co-stars — the show's other parental figures, Molly Ringwald, Skeet Ulrich, Mädchen Amick, Mark Consuelos and Marisol Nichols — visited TODAY Tuesday and talked about what fans can expect as the series goes on without him. "We lost our friend and colleague, Luke Perry, at the end of last season, so this season, we deal with his death on the show," Ringwald explained. "Fred Andrews dies, as well, and we have to say goodbye to him. That's the beginning of the season." A clip from that premiere episode reveals the heartbreaking moment Archie, played by KJ Apa, and his friends learn of his father's death. "It's a very moving tribute," Ringwald said of the emotional scenes. But it wasn't an easy tribute to create. Perry died following a massive stroke in March of this year, after having filmed all of his episodes last season. The new season marks the first time the cast has worked without him. "It was really difficult to film, to go back," Ulrich said. "We'd had a long season of shooting, and it was hard dive into (it), for sure, to dredge all that up."

Last season's production schedule meant "Riverdale" was unable to fully address Perry's death (and Fred's departure from the series), until this week's fourth-season opener (Wednesday, 8 EDT/PDT). But Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) will have a little help saying goodbye to both Fred and Luke. Shannen Doherty, Perry's friend and "Beverly Hills, 90210" co-star, joins the cast in Wednesday's Fred-centric episode, "In Memoriam." At the Television Critics Association tour in August to promote Fox's "90210" meta-revival "BH90210," Doherty opened up about the emotional and "cathartic" experience. CW wouldn't reveal what role Doherty plays or how Fred exits the series until after the episode airs, but playing the mysterious character left the actress very emotional. "It was extremely hard in the sense of the emotions, but I feel really proud and honored and extremely humbled that they asked me and I got to be a part of it," she said. Doherty reached out to loved ones in Perry's life to make sure they were comfortable with her appearing on "Riverdale." "I spoke to certain family members and they were behind it," she said. "Luke's manager Steve (Himber) was very supportive, and I went into it knowing that I was being supported by everyone that really mattered to Luke. And knowing that it was a show that he had been trying to get me on since Day 1 (laughs), it was like this really beautiful moment."

Riverdale finally aired the first episode of Season 4 on Wednesday (Oct. 10), and gave Luke Perry's character Fred Andrews a touching sendoff in the process. The teen drama took a momentary break from the onslaught of out-there murder plots and sarcastic quips to honor Perry, after his untimely passing and offered a tender, moving end for Fred and a new beginning for Archie. Perry passed away at just 52 after suffering a stroke earlier this year. Ever since then, the Riverdale crew has been devastated by the loss, as they've struggled to move beyond the hole he left in the show as well as their hearts. He portrayed Archie's (KJ Apa) father Fred Andrews, who offered a constant source of support and wisdom to his fictional son, making his departure from the show even more heartbreaking. The episode offered a sensible conclusion for Perry's storyline on Riverdale, as Fred Andrews had previously been "out of town" for most of season 3. During the first episode of season 4, Archie receives a life-changing phone call: he learns Fred has passed away after being hit by a car. His body was transported to a funeral home in another town, and as such would be there until after the 4th of July holiday. Archie had to make a trip to Cherry Creek with friends in tow to pick his father up, which made for some of the most heart-wrenching viewing ever for Riverdale fans.

What will happen to Alice Cooper? Given that Alice was undercover for the FBI when she shot Edgar, it’s unlikely the Riverdale stalwart will go to prison for her actions. Betty mentioned that she was already working on a scandalous exposé, so seems to have bounced back. But you’d expect Evelyn Evernever to seek revenge for her husband’s murder and trouble is never too far away where Alice is concerned… How will Betty deal with it all? The (apparent) death of Edgar Evernever means that both of Betty’s parents are now murderers. Father Hal Cooper, aka serial killer the Black Hood, had more than a few bodies to his name from previous seasons. But with Betty’s mum Alice notching her first kill too, what effect could the knowledge have on her daughter? Is she going to bounce back, or are we going to see the return of Dark Betty? http://instagram.com/p/B3_LA7lHJ3V And crucially, is Edgar really dead? It’s Riverdale, and there was nothing in the episode that explicitly said Edgar had snuffed it. The gun shots could have been fatal, but y’know, he could have survived. Maybe Alice is a double agent for The Farm and helped him escape! It’s Riverdale, so anything goes – and chances are this won’t be the last we’ll see of The Farm.
