During a Winter Olympics, they’re Team Canada’s superstars, competing in the marquee event, figure skating.
But when the Olympic glory has faded for another four years, many top-flight skaters his the road with Stars on Ice. What remains is these remarkable athletes’ strength and grace, but the emphasis is on entertainment rather than cut-throat competition.
With no judges other than the enthusiastic crowd, veteran Kurt Browning led a Stars on Ice who’s-who of Canadian skating into the Saddledome on Sunday. (How nice to see the Dome ice getting some use this time of year.) The lineup included Patrick Chan, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, Joannie Rochette, Jeffrey Buttle, Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford, Kaetlyn Osmond, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, and Shawn Sawyer.
A creative team that includes producer and skating icon Scott Hamilton turns the spotlight on the artistic side of figure skating and the result is astonishing. All the skaters shine, but Sawyer with some aggressive routines that include front flips, and Rochette’s near perfection (If she slipped even once, I didn’t notice) stood out for me.
Where else can you see four of the nation’s finest female athletes (Rochette, Virtue, Osmond and Weaver) stretch their artistic muscles for this: A ballet-based tale of alienation set to Radiohead’s Creep? Sounds weird, even a little creepy, but it works. (This video was shot at the Montreal stop.)

Figure skater Joannie Rochette returned home on Wednesday, as part of the tour Stars on Ice presented at the Bell Centre. Back after a three-week tour in Japan, skaters are anxious to reconnect with the Quebec public. "The Japanese were very friendly, told the former vice-world champion. Bell Centre spectators are known to be much more demonstrative and noisy. That's why skaters are happy to be in Montreal. It's always special to skate before our family and friends. It's a little more stressful than usual." Quebecer especially appreciate the camaraderie within the company. After playing solo throughout their careers, these athletes must now learn to work in groups. "Skaters are more used to working alone, then this is a great opportunity to meet. The mix of generations also makes very nice show."

SKATING Magazine - Welcome to US Figure SkatingThe competitive figure skating season may be over, but for some U.S. skaters, there has been little time to relax. That’s because they are on the road as cast members of the “Stars on Ice” tour. The staff members of Figure Skaters Online had the opportunity to see a show or two near their respective hometowns. We all enjoyed the show! The tour stars 2014 Olympic gold medalists Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who are managing to appear in all the shows despite competing on ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars.” The show also stars Olympic team bronze medalists Jeremy Abbott, Gracie Gold and Ashley Wagner. 2011 U.S. Champion Ryan Bradley, two-time U.S. Champion Alissa Czisny, 2010 Olympian and 2014 U.S. Bronze medalist Mirai Nagasu, World Junior Champion Josh Farris and two-time U.S. bronze medalists Kimberly Navarro and Brent Bommentre are also apart of the cast.
