The Stars on Ice will skate into Hershey's Giant Center on May 4, and one among their number is a Pennsylvania native. "It gets pretty cold in Pennsylvania in the winter time," said Scranton native Adam Rippon, the 2016 US Figure Skating Champion. "My mom would take me to this outdoor rink every year." Oddly enough for someone who would go on to be among the best in the nation, Rippon didn't really take to skating at first. "I wasn't really a fan," he said. "It was just too cold and all I wanted was a hot chocolate." But by age 10, Rippon was asking to go back to the Scranton ice rink and sign up for classes. And over the course of his training, he would come to the old Hershey Arena for competitions - even if, once again, his attention would wander a bit in favor of chocolate-themed attractions. "I always skated badly there, because I always wanted to go to Hersheypark," Rippon admitted.

Two 17-year-old phenoms captured gold at the 2017 National Championships, giving a youthful glow to U.S. Figure Skating. Nathan Chen, with his unprecedented technical prowess, is rapidly becoming Skating’s next superstar, while Karen Chen is the first lady not named Wagner or Gold to sit atop the podium since 2011. The two Chens will headline the 2017 Stars on Ice tour that will arrive in Anaheim on Saturday, May 13 for a 7:30 PM performance at the Honda Center. The world is eagerly awaiting next year’s Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, commencing in February 2018. Here in the United States the wait will not be quite as long, as the 2017 Stars on Ice tour will be the ultimate preview of the U.S. Figure Skating team that will compete at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Nathan Chen, the first man to land five quadruple jumps in one program, and Karen Chen, whose record-setting short program catapulted her to gold at the U.S. Nationals, will lead a stellar cast of medal hopefuls, including: three-time U.S. Champion and 2016 World Silver Medalist Ashley Wagner, two-time U.S. Champion Gracie Gold, and U.S. Ice Dance Champions and two-time World Medalists Madison Chock & Evan Bates. In addition to those with an eye on medaling next Winter, the 2017 Stars on Ice cast will also include three of the most accomplished skaters in U.S. history; reigning Olympic Ice Dance Gold Medalists Meryl Davis & Charlie White, and four-time U.S. Champion and Olympic Bronze Medalist Jeremy Abbott.

Sitting on a couch on a day off during a whistle-stop tour, Ashley Wagner looks every bit one of the top athletes on Earth. That is until she makes an admission. "I think that I'm definitely the Martian of figure skating," Wagner said with a smile, trying to explain why, at now 26 years old, she is still one of the best figure skaters in the world. "Age is just a number, and I think people, in general, like to focus on female athlete's age and define them by that, and my job is just to show them how irrelevant that is." She's made that age irrelevant, in a sport which tends to call people over the hill in their 20s. She won a team bronze at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, and the U.S. Championship a year later. In 2016, she was the World Silver Medalist in Ladies figure skating, and won Skate America. They are accomplishments she brings to town during a brief stay in a place she has called her "heart home." Wagner will appear in the "Stars on Ice" tour at KeyArena Saturday and a show in Wenatchee Sunday.
