Britain's Prince Charles dreaded the prospect of divorce a year before he wed Princess Diana, suggests a letter he wrote in 1980 that is up for sale in the United States. "I do hope you have recovered from the traumatic business of marriage and divorce in such a short time," he told Janet Jenkins, a receptionist at the British consulate in Montreal whom he met in 1975. "Thank goodness you discovered the mistake early enough and didn't start a family," he added in the seven-page handwritten letter on Windsor Castle letterhead. "Starting a family and making a mistake like that is frankly, something which concerns me enormously and I think my solution of marrying a girl from each Commonwealth country is the best one!" He went on to tell Jenkins that "whatever happens I will make sure you are given early warning," in the correspondence that included a belated happy birthday wish. The letter is being put up for sale for $3,900 by Alicia Carroll, a Los Angeles collector and dealer of British royal memorabilia. It is among six written by the Prince of Wales to Jenkins that Carroll had attempted to auction off on eBay in 2009 with an asking price of $30,000.

Prince William receives highly sensitive cabinet papers as well as his father, Prince Charles, it has emerged. The second in line to the throne is sent confidential papers from the very top of government “occasionally” and “when relevant”, a royal source confirmed. This follows news of the little-known access granted to Charles to the highest-level government dossiers, which was exposed in the Guardian on Tuesday after a three-year freedom of information battle by Republic, the campaign for an elected head of state. The government justified Charles’s access to the high level cabinet memorandums, which even ministers of state do not see, because he was heir to the throne. On Wednesday night it said William’s access was because he was “future heir to the throne”. The Guardian understands the amount of material William receives is more modest than that given to Charles or the Queen and includes material relating to countries where he is engaged in official overseas visits.

Susan Boyle, Paul Potts, Jonathan and Charlotte... Prince Charles? The future king gave the Britain's Got Talent finalists a run for their money after belting out a Scottish folk song for the reality show's presenters Ant and Dec. Without much encouragement, the 67-year-old sang Aberdeenshire anthem, The Bonnie Lass o'Fyvie, for the Geordie duo during an evening at his Scottish home, Dumfries House. Clearly enthralled by the Prince of Wales' skit, the pair went on to shower the royal with warm praise and joked that if he was auditioning on the ITV programme he'd be 'through to the next round'.

Thirty-five years ago this week, London was en fete, and the rest of the United Kingdom and much of the world came to a halt as Lady Diana Spencer promised to love, honour — but not obey — Prince Charles. Her vows — like her wedding dress, her hair and even her virtue — were under global scrutiny. No wonder she fluffed her lines and muddled the Prince's names, calling him 'Philip Charles' instead of 'Charles Philip'. In hindsight, the mix-up seems another omen for a doomed marriage, along with the Prince of Wales's notorious 'whatever in love means' remark on the day of their engagement. This year, as in years past, there has been nothing to distinguish the date, July 29 — but then, there has been precious little recognition, anyway, of the contribution Diana made to the Royal Family and to the life of the nation.
