The Oregon mother of two whose July 24 disappearance rallied her family and community in a hopeful search died of suicide by asphyxiation, police said Wednesday. A news release from the Newberg-Dundee Police Department stated, "detectives and the medical examiner have concluded that Jennifer had been deceased fairly close to the time she was reported missing," reports The Oregonian.
Police said they found a note addressed to her family inside her Lexus SUV when her body and vehicle were discovered Tuesday on a rural road in Yamhill County. A statement of thanks from the family and signed by Huston's parents, Bill and Deborah Turner, reads: "Our hearts ache today. We have lost our first born child. We have lost a wife and mother. We don't know what led Jennifer to this dark place and to this end and perhaps never will understand this."
"We are incredibly thankful to family, friends, community and media for their searching, supporting and getting the information out that led to locating Jennifer's car and finding Jennifer." Huston, 38, had last been spotted July 24 on a pharmacy surveillance tape buying a bottle of Gatorade, a package of trail mix, and a box of over-the-counter sleeping pills. Her husband, Kallen, said at a news conference that she'd been complaining about headaches for the previous three days, but that nothing else had indicated stress or panic before she vanished.
Newberg-Dundee detectives and crime-scene technicians from the Oregon State Police found an empty box of sleeping medication, Huston's purse and her cell phone in her SUV. Computer-forensic detectives analyzed her cell phone. They found no indication of "nefarious" activities.
Newberg-Dundee police said Wednesday that Jennifer Huston died of suicide by asphyxiation after parking her SUV along a rural Sheridan logging road.
