The Russian Figure Skating Federation and Channel One have officially announced the holding of a team tournament - the Channel One Figure Skating Cup. The competition will take place with spectators at the Megasport arena in Moscow from 5 to 7 February. The prize fund is 10 million rubles.
Information about the holding of this tournament, which in part should compensate for the postponement or cancellation of several major starts, appeared earlier, but now the organizers have officially confirmed its holding, and also named the composition. Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva became the team captains. Also invited are athletes who took first to sixth places at the Russian Championship 2021, European champions in 2020 and world champions. Participants will perform in short and free skating in all four types of figure skating.
The winning team will be determined by the total score. The refereeing will take place according to the current ISU system. Also, the participants will compete for the People's Choice Prize, voting - live on the First Channel.
The highlight of the Cup should be a separate jumping tournament. The teams will divide the lot, under the guidance of the captain, each team will choose a name for itself and prepare a number for its fans.
What is good for the musketeers, how is it for the skaters?
Team tournaments are a rather controversial thing in figure skating, and the motto "one for all and all for one" seems to fit very poorly here, since historically everyone works for personal results, and intense rivalry unfolds even in the group of one coaching staff ...
However, the growing popularity of this sport has led to the fact that classical tournaments for both fans and athletes have become few. The first team competitions were started, of course, by the Japanese, for whom figure skating is akin to football in England. So, in 1997, the Japan Open tournament was created, where athletes from Japan and other countries are invited, who are especially favored by the public. This is a commercial competition and is not sponsored by the International Skating Union (ISU).
But after some time, ISU realized that it was strange to miss the opportunity to arrange another spectacular event and in 2009 they organized the World Figure Skating Team Championship. It is held every two years, it is also commercial: the prize fund is drawn between teams from six countries. By the way, the figure skater from Yekaterinburg Maxim Kovtun took part in four of the six championships (silver in 2015 and 2017).
Already in Sochi in 2014, the team tournament entered the Olympic program, and the first champions, we recall, were the Russians together, again, with the figure skater from the capital of the Urals, Yulia Lipnitskaya .
