Karen, who has 49,000 Twitter followers, also defends her daily uploading of sexy snaps and insists her husband, Labour MP Simon Danczuk, 48, couldn’t be prouder. “Someone tweeted me recently saying that Amy and Kim knew more about real life than most politicians,” she explains. “And you know what? More fool anyone who doubts those women because they have made it and have the bank balances to prove it. Kim’s made an entire career out of her figure and like it or not, she’s influential. People listen to what she has to say.
“People voted for me because I was a normal working-class girl with a northern accent like them. “I don’t understand why to be a feminist and to work in politics you have to dress like a man. Some of the snooty women dress with shirts buttoned up to their chins and frumpy old-fashioned suits. And they wonder why other women don’t want to vote for them? What’s wrong with being feminine? Never underestimate the power of high heels and a good bra, I always say.”
Abuse More bikini pictures of her emerged when she was snapped on a sunshine break earlier this year. Then she claimed publicly that she had suffered years of abuse from her family, including sexual abuse when she was a child. “I’m at a stage in my life where I can finally be me,” she reveals. “Everyone else takes selfies all the time, why can’t I? I think the reaction was over the top at the start. It’s only unusual because I’m a councillor and a politician’s wife. I underestimated how much people would comment on my boobs Yes it is nice to hear nice comments. I like being curvy and looking like a real woman. I’d never be size zero.
“Every time I post a picture people comment mostly on my ding-dongs. People ask me if I’ve named them so maybe I should – but definitely not Gordon and Brown!” Karen might be confident enough to laugh and joke at herself now. But she hasn’t always been the happy, unflappable woman we meet today. She says her childhood was unhappy. And years of school bullying made her determined to better herself. “I was the ugly kid growing up and was horribly bullied,” she explains. In school plays I was hidden at the back. “It annoys me when celebrities like Amy Willerton come out and say that they were ugly at school and then you see the photos and they were actually stunning. I really was a geek. Recently some girls came up to me and apologised for being so cruel back then. It’s given me a thicker skin, which you need in politics.
With the election on May 7, Karen turns her attention to the main contenders for Prime Minister. “Of course I am going to say I will vote for Ed Miliband,” she grins. “Like many I wasn’t sure at first but I really do like him now. “More recently he’s shown that he can be a good Prime Minister. He’s speaking what people want to hear. “As a person he is exceptionally intelligent. He’s very loving and caring. He genuinely does care and is kind. For me David Cameron is too snidey and won’t give a straight answer. He only benefits the rich because that’s where he comes from. “I pity Nick Clegg as he propped up the Tory government and screwed the poor. People will never forgive him for raising tuition fees. “As for Nigel Farage? I reckon he’d be a laugh down the pub.”
