Ballerini told Billboard Country Update that that was what she set out to do with her latest song, “Legends.” “I was going through a breakup at the time, and I had written a lot of sassy, angry, bitter songs about it — which you will hear on the record. But I really wanted to write a song about choosing to look back on the relationship fondly, which is hard sometimes when you’re out of something and heartbroken.” The song, she said, has been her first step of letting it all go and moving on. Since she wrote the song, Ballerini’s former broken heart has been replaced with one that is very much intact. The singer-songwriter is currently happy and in love and engaged to country newcomer Morgan Evans. But if you can see some ambiguity in the lyrics, you can relate to the song no matter where your own heart is. “No matter if someone is in major love, or is falling out of it, or just has a lot of people around them that they have a good relationship with, they can hear their story in that song,” she said.

When Kelsea Ballerini first started out in music, she knew she didn't sound like herself. As a young songwriter, Ballerini was learning from her idols, figuring out how to write songs by listening to Taylor Swift, Shania Twain, and Faith Hill. She wrote songs she thought sounded like the ones she heard on the radio. "But the reality was, they were already on the radio," Ballerini said in an interview with Cosmopolitan.com. "And so no one wanted to hear what I had to say, 'cause it was already said." So as a new Nashville resident (Ballerini grew up three hours away in Knoxville, Tennessee), she took some time to figure out what it was she actually wanted to stand for. And although she's found her voice, she knows those idols helped pave the way for her success. "Taylor [Swift] launched and completely changed the music industry in the most amazing way. I really think that she blazed a trail for all my fellow new women in country. I’ve always looked up to Taylor ... so when she tweeted about my EP before my album even came out, I think that fact that she did that was her kind of being like, I was a young singer/songwriter on an independent label, I feel you. And that was the first moment of us relating to each other."

With a knack for writing hit songs and the current title of country's sweetheart, Kelsea Ballerini is comparable to Taylor Swift in many ways (and has subsequently been compared to the once-country princess many a time). Naturally, the two became close as Ballerini's career began to take off, remaining close to this day. "I was just texting with her today!" Ballerini tells Billboard backstage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival, where Ballerini played an afternoon set at the fest's Daytime Village Saturday (Sept. 23). "She’s amazing and she’s supportive. We’re obviously in different genres now, but we’re both songwriters at heart and root each other on." Coincidentally, the girls will be releasing their forthcoming (and both highly anticipated) albums just one week apart, with Ballerini's Unapologetically arriving Nov. 3 and Swift's Reputation coming Nov. 10. With such close ties to T-Swift, has Ballerini gotten a sneak peek of what's coming after the Billboard Hot 100-topping "Look What You Made Me Do" and follow-up release "...Ready For It?" Nope.

Kelsea Ballerini is treating fans to a pretty, acoustic cover of "Delicate," Taylor Swift's latest single. The country singer-songwriter, lovingly referred to as "lil sis" by her pal Swift, posted a short video of herself playing a stripped-down version of the intimate pop song on Twitter. "isn't it," she captioned the clip on Saturday (March 31), quoting a lyric from "Delicate." "This ain't for the best/ My reputation's never been worse, so/ You must like me for me/ We can't make/ Any promises now can we, babe/ But you can make me a drink," Ballerini sings, before jumping into the song's chorus.
