Up until last night, most of Olivia Rodrigo’s live sets had been awards-show performances or short little one-off gigs. After all, Rodrigo only has one album, and that album is only like half an hour long. But Rodrigo is also a sensation, and now she’s finally become a touring act. Last night, just after winning Best New Artist at the Grammys, Rodrigo kicked off her Sour tour at Portland’s Theater Of The Clouds, and she filled out her setlist by honoring a couple of her alterna-pop predecessors. Four songs into last night’s set, just after “Drivers License,” Olivia Rodrigo sang “Complicated,” the 2002 breakout smash from Avril Lavigne. Later in the set, she also broke out Veruca Salt’s 1994 banger “Seether.” Rodrigo wasn’t even born when those two songs came out; she arrived into the world a year after Lavigne released “Complicated.” But you can definitely hear echoes of both songs in Sour, and it’s cool to see Rodrigo paying that kind of tribute. The fan-made videos of both of those covers are short and blurry, but they’re both a lot of fun, too. “Complicated,” in particular, induced a massive crowd singalong. Below, check out videos of both covers and the setlist from last night’s show, via Setlist.fm. SETLIST: 01 “Brutal” 02 “Jealousy, Jealousy” 03 “Drivers License” 04 “Complicated” (Avril Lavigne cover) 05 “Hope Ur OK” (acoustic) 06 “Enough For You” / “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back” (acoustic) 07 “Happier” 08 “Seether” (Veruca Salt cover) 09 “Favorite Crime” 10 “Traitor” 11 “Deja Vu” ///// 12 “Good 4 U”

Olivia Rodrigo kicked off her highly anticipated Sour Tour in Portland Tuesday evening — and news of the teen superstar’s surprise cover of Veruca Salt’s 1994 single “Seether” during the show set music Twitter ablaze, with reactions from fans of the trailblazing grunge outfit ranging from enthusiastic to bewildered.
Veruca Salt, however, is lending their full support to Rodrigo’s rendition of their breakthrough hit, sharing their reaction to the news on social media. “Xx to @oliviarodrigo for covering our bop amidst all of hers! We love it,” the band wrote in an Instagram post. “We’ve been belting out #brutal and #good4u in our cars nonstop for the past year, so this made our day.” The band declined Rolling Stone‘s request for further comment on the cover.
Rodrigo told the Portland crowd that she was introduced to Veruca Salt by her mother — a factoid that led more than a few Gen Xers online to jokingly confront their own mortality. “Realizing the fuzzy feeling I get in hearing Olivia Rodrigo covered Veruca Salt is probably similar to when my dad told me that Alanis Morissette reminded him of Janis Joplin,” one Twitter user wrote.
“Seether,” the lead single from Veruca Salt’s debut album American Thighs, propelled the Chicago-based band from underground scene queens to major label darlings when the track gained traction on college radio and MTV. Although the band, fronted by vocalists and guitarists Nina Gordon and Louise Post, struggled to match the success of “Seether” in later years, the group is still regarded as a key player in the rise of late-90s female-fronted alternative rock.

Fresh off winning three Grammys, including Best New Artist, Olivia Rodrigo resumed her tour and played two covers that fit in perfectly alongside the more rockin' songs from her great 2021 debut album SOUR. She did "Complicated," the classic breakthrough single by her punky pop forebear Avril Lavigne (who's currently in the midst of a well-timed comeback), and she did Veruca Salt's '90s alt-rock classic "Seether." You can watch videos of both covers below.
Among the many fans of Olivia's "Seether" cover are Veruca Salt themselves, and they also took the opportunity to shoutout their fandom of Olivia's original music. They wrote, "Xx to @oliviarodrigo for covering our bop amidst all of hers! 💥🔥💥We love it. We’ve been belting out #brutal and #good4u in our cars nonstop for the past year, so this made our day. See you in L.A and Chicago."
Avril approves of the "Complicated" cover too:

How do Olivia Rodrigo and Conan Gray kill time between concerts? Apparently, by recreating scenes from the world’s most beloved teen romance, Twilight. The pop musician best friends teamed up for a hilarious TikTok posted to Gray’s account in which they roam around Vancouver’s Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre — where Rodrigo’s Sour Tour stopped by on Thursday (April 7) — and lip synced to one of Robert Pattinson’s most memorable scenes in the first Twilight film. “As if you could outrun me!” the “Drivers License” singer mouths in tandem with Pattinson’s voice before speed-walking across the floor beneath her stage. The clip is sped up, which makes Rodrigo — who wears a skirt with Virgin Suicides character Lux Lisbon printed on it — look especially funny. “As if you could fight me off,” continues Pattinson in the audio, who famously played handsome boyfriend Edward Cullen. This time, the line is mouthed by a menacing-looking Gray, who then proceeds to throw fake punches at a huge poster of Rodrigo hung inside the venue. The video has been viewed nearly 7 million times within ten hours of being posted, accumulating more than 2 million likes. Rodrigo has long been a fan of the Twilight films, and once posted a video to her Instagram singing an original song written from the perspective of the saga’s heroine, Bella Swan.
