Russia threatens to up Kyiv strikes over cross-border attacks
43,225 views Apr 16, 2022 Areas around the capital Kyiv have come under attack.
Russia says it shelled a Ukrainian military facility on the outskirts, just hours after the sinking of the flagship of its Black Sea fleet.
For the first time in the seven-week siege Russia has used long-range bombers to target the port city.
Why it matters: The threat comes after the ministry announced the sinking of the Moskva cruiser, the flagship of its Black Sea fleet. Ukraine said it struck the ship with cruise missiles, while Russia claimed it sank in a storm while being towed for repairs after a fire broke out on board.
What they're saying: "The number and scale of missile strikes on targets in Kyiv will increase in response to any terrorist attacks or acts of sabotage on Russian territory committed by the Kyiv nationalist regime," Russia's Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said.
The big picture: The United Nations Human Rights Council estimated Thursday that at least 1,964 civilians have been killed and 2,613 injured during Russia's invasion of Ukraine, though it stressed that its estimates were probably considerably lower than the actual figures because ongoing fighting has delayed its documentation efforts

Moscow also warned of what it called "unpredictable consequences" if the United States and its allies continue to supply Ukraine with weapons.

Russian forces accelerated scattered attacks on Kyiv, western Ukraine and beyond Saturday in an explosive reminder to Ukrainians and their Western supporters that the whole country remains under threat despite Russia’s pivot toward mounting a new offensive in the east. Stung by the loss of its Black Sea flagship and indignant over alleged Ukrainian aggression on Russian territory, Russia’s military command had warned of renewed missile strikes on Ukraine’s capital. Officials in Moscow said they were targeting military sites, a claim repeated - and refuted by witnesses - throughout 52 days of war. But the toll reaches much deeper. Each day brings new discoveries of civilian victims of an invasion that has shattered European security. As Russia prepared for the anticipated offensive, a mother wept over her 15-year-old son’s body after rockets hit a residential area of Kharkiv, a city in the northeast. An infant and at least eight other people died, officials said. In the Kyiv region, Ukrainian authorities have reported finding the bodies of more than 900 civilians, most shot dead, since Russian troops retreated two weeks ago. Smoke rose from the capital again early Saturday as Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a strike that killed one person and wounded several. The mayor advised residents who fled the city earlier in the war not to return. “We’re not ruling out further strikes on the capital,” Klitschko said. “If you have the opportunity to stay a little bit longer in the cities where it’s safer, do it.” It was not immediately clear from the ground what was hit in Saturday’s strike on Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district. The sprawling district on the southeastern edge of the capital contains a mixture of Soviet-style apartment blocks, newer shopping centers and big-box retail outlets, industrial areas and railyards.

Ukraine urges UN to do more to rescue civilians - BBC News 21,329 views Apr 23, 2022 The evacuation of about 100,000 people trapped in Mariupol will only succeed with the help of the UN, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister has said.
Iryna Vereshchuk told BBC the UN needed to become involved in arranging humanitarian corridors, saying it was the "only organisation with the capacity and strength to prevent death" but was so far "only observing events".
United Nations Secretary General António Guterres is to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Tuesday.
Speaking before the visit was announced, Vereshchuk said "evacuation is only possible with the assistance of the UN. The UN and Guterres need to get involved and arrange corridors".
