The first trial in a case in which former US President Donald Trump was charged with paying hush money for an affair before the 2016 presidential election and fraudulently manipulating its financial records was held on the 15th in a court in eastern New York. Trump, who is seeking re-election in November's presidential election and is pleading not guilty, showed a willingness to fight the charges in front of the court, criticizing the charges as "political persecution" and "election interference."
This case was the earliest of Trump's four criminal trials to begin. This is the first time that a former US president has been a defendant in a criminal trial.
According to the indictment and other documents, in October 2016, Trump had a former porn actress pay a hush money of $130,000 (approximately 20 million yen) to a lawyer in order to prevent an extramarital affair scandal from being discovered, and after he was elected. He is facing 34 charges for allegedly falsifying the business records of his family's company when he reimbursed expenses.
The trial is expected to last one and a half to two months. On the 15th, the first day of the trial, the process of selecting 12 jurors from New Yorkers to decide whether the jury was guilty or not guilty was underway.

[Washington Current Affairs] On the 15th, Robert Kennedy Jr., who is running as an independent candidate for the U.S. presidential election, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he was approached by former Republican President Trump's camp to become his vice presidential candidate. However, he revealed that he refused.
However, Mr. Trump's camp denies this.
Mr. Kennedy wrote, ``Mr. Trump's emissary asked me to become his vice president.I respectfully declined the offer.'' According to US media, Kennedy made similar claims in January.
In response, a person affiliated with the Trump campaign retorted on social media, saying, ``You are a left-wing idiot and should not be approached.'' The campaign also launched a new website criticizing Kennedy's policies.

Vice President Aso was greeted with a smile by Mr. Trump at the entrance of Trump Tower in New York City.
Former US President Trump "Mr. Aso is a wonderful person, and we met through the great Shinzo (former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe), who is a dear friend of ours. We will now discuss various topics, including the current situation between Japan and the United States."
Mr. Trump used the word "great" six times to refer to Shinzo Abe, who was Prime Minister during his term as president, and welcomed Mr. Aso's visit, who was a close ally of Mr. Abe. It appears that the two leaders exchanged opinions on the current situation in both countries, and the meeting lasted about an hour.
When Mr. Aso visited the United States in January of this year, he had contact with former President Trump's side, but a meeting did not materialize.
