Star Wars: Episode VIII will see Daisy Ridley’s character Rey come to terms with her connection to The Force. The 24-year-old actress played a central role in the critically acclaimed Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rian Johnson – who is directing the latest installment in the franchise – has offered an insight into what fans can expect from the upcoming movie. He explained: “Part of what’s she’s dealing with is the realization that she has this power and this gift. She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential.” The new movie picks up from where ‘The Force Awakens’ concluded, with Luke Skywalker making a fleeting appearance. The director explained that the much-anticipated movie will explore why Luke, played by Mark Hamill, has chosen to isolate himself.

Director Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick) has revealed that the film will centre on Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), telling USA Today that the film promises to “be a blast and to be funny and to be a ride the way The Force Awakens and the original Star Wars movies were.” As for the plot details, not much is known beyond Luke Skywalker taking the central role in the film, although rumours started circling online earlier this month suggesting that Episode VIII would get its own cuddly creatures, similar to the audience splitting Ewoks from Return of the Jedi. The suggestion is that *SPOILER WARNING* Luke has been sharing his time on Aach-To, which saw Kerry’s Skellig Michael double up as the alien world, with a “bird mixed with a Gremlin.”

Lucasfilm closed out the 40 Years of Star Wars panel at Star Wars Celebration with a touching tribute to Carrie Fisher, recognizing her iconic role as Princess Leia throughout the franchise. Fisher, who passed away last December, has been an integral part of Star Wars from its inception, and the video serves as a brief but moving look back at both her work as Leia Organa, and her tremendous presence off-camera. The tribute also includes appearances from various cast and crew members from the original trilogy and the new films, many of whom highlighted how Fisher’s character has been an inspiration both for their own roles in the films as well as for millions of fans.

Following Carrie Fisher’s death late last year, it was evident that the final installment of the new Star Wars trilogy was going to have to be altered. And, according to an interview Entertainment Weekly published with series brand manager Kathleen Kennedy last month, the team behind Episode IX drastically shifted courses after her tragic departure. “We pretty much started over,” she said. Around the same time, Kennedy confirmed that Fisher wouldn’t be present in Colin Trevorrow’s film, countering an earlier report from Todd Fisher, who said that he and Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd had granted the production permission to use footage of the star. It also put to rest any fears that the studio would try to do to her what it did to Peter Cushing in Rogue One. In happier Star Wars amendment news, EW also reported yesterday that it was Rian Johnson who asked J.J. Abrams to have R2-D2 go with Rey to find Luke at the end of The Force Awakens. “Originally it was BB-8 who went with Rey, which makes sense for the story in a way,” Johnson said. “But I asked, ‘Can you do me this solid and switch the droids?’” Hopefully, that means some good Luke-R2 bonding time is coming in The Last Jedi

Ahead of Star Wars: Episode IX releasing later this year, a new parody video has emerged, featuring Kylo Ren and Rey serenading each other with an adapted version of 'Shallow' from A Star is Born. The hit duet was originally performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the latter's directorial debut. Both the film and song have since gone on to receive numerous awards, as well as Academy Award nominations. Filming on the still-untitled Star Wars sequel recently wrapped. Director J.J. Abrams, who also helmed Star Wars: The Force Awakens, released an on-set photo to celebrate the achievement. Having previously passed the baton to Rian Johnson for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Abrams reclaimed the director's chair for the concluding installment after previously scheduled director Colin Trevorrow was let go. When last seen together, Rey (Daisy Ridley) chose to literally and figuratively close the door on Kylo - and their burgeoning connection - after failing to steer him fully towards redemption.
