On the 31st, Chinese President Xi Jinping gave his customary televised speech to usher in the New Year, and regarding Taiwan, he said, ``The reunification of the motherland is a historical necessity,'' and ``compatriots on both sides of the strait (China and Taiwan) should join hands.'' We must unite and join hands to share the great glory of national rejuvenation." Ahead of Taiwan's presidential election to be held on January 13th, this is a form of reaffirming Taiwan's determination for "unification."
Regarding Hong Kong, Mr. Xi said, ``We must continue to support Hong Kong so that it can maintain its long-term prosperity and stability as it better integrates with the broader picture of national development.'' It is expected that Hong Kong will further integrate Hong Kong and mainland China in the economic field and other areas.
He also mentioned that 2024 will mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and emphasized that ``we must unwaveringly push forward with Chinese-style modernization.'' "Chinese-style modernization" is a development model unique to China that differs from that of the West and is advocated by Mr. Xi. The Xi administration has gone beyond simply emphasizing economic superiority, as it has done in the past, to strongly asserting its own unique values, and this trend is expected to continue.
