Taylor Swift posted a nitty gritty still of herself on Instagram Wednesday to tease her new video for "Out of the Woods," which will debut on ABC's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest Thursday. The image is a close-up of Swift covered in mud with matted hair in her eyes and a snarl on her lips. "Are we out of the woods yet?" reads the caption. Judging by the picture, the idea of being stuck in the "woods" will be treated quite literally in the video. New Year's Rockin' Eve will begin at 8 p.m. ET but there has been no confirmation yet of what time the video will premiere or if the singer herself will make an appearance to introduce it. "Out of the Woods," which was co-written with Jack Antonoff, is Swift's sixth single from her smash album 1989, following "Shake It Off," "Blank Space," "Style," "Bad Blood," and "Wildest Dreams."

The epic video begins with her standing on an empty beach in a beautiful baby blue dress, staring out to sea, with the words: “She lost him.” Vines creep across the beach to find her, and soon she finds herself in the forest – where wolves begin the pursuit. But the pop star survives her ordeal and becomes at one with nature. Stepping literally “out of the woods”, covered in mud and dirt, she approaches the original Taylor standing on the beach – and then the video ends with the words: “She lost him, but she found herself, and somehow that was everything” Out Of The Woods is Taylor’s sixth single from her best-selling album 1989 and premiered in the US on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. She has already brought out music videos for Bad Blood, Blank Space, Shake It Off, Wildest Dreams and Style.

After the release of Taylor Swift’s “Out of the Woods” music video, director Joseph Kahn revealed behind-the-scenes photos from her icy shoot. “Taylor was so dedicated to making this video,” Kahn wrote on Twitter. “I was wrapped in snow gear. She was in a dress. She suffered for her art.” He continued, “Taylor chose to stay in the mud for hours to keep the shoot moving. No in and out. Just gangstered it. She is bad ass.” Kahn went into further detail in a series of Instagram posts. The director, who also helmed Swift’s videos for “Blank Space,” “Wildest Dreams,” and ”Bad Blood,” shared snapshots of him scouting locations and “landing on top of mountains no human been on before.” He wrote, “Three helicopters for [“Out of the Woods” music video]. One for people, one for ground equipment, one for camera.”

When Taylor Swift premiered the music video for “Out of the Woods” on New Year’s Eve 2015, we knew it was going to be big. Why else would you drop something on one of the biggest holidays of the year? Did you happen to notice what Tay is wearing in the video? It looks pretty darn similar to the little blue sundress she sported in the breakup image seen ‘round the world after her split from Harry Styles in 2013. Remember the paparazzi pic of a super-glum Taylor alone on a boat after their final fight? There’s no way this ensemble was an accident, especially when it’s featured in a song that is most likely about Harry. Tay wears the Cinderella-esque dress throughout the fairytale video — though it’s also notable that it gets more and more ravaged as the clip goes on. But that’s not where the Styles symbolism stops. True Swifties know that Taylor and Harry kissed in public on New Year’s Eve 2013, which means the timing of this video’s release probably wasn’t a coincidence. (Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest also played a pre-recorded One Direction performance, so while Harry was on vacation with Kendall Jenner, he was indirectly linked to his ex’s song at least once that night. Subtle, Tay.) Now, any devout Swiftie or Directioner could go on for hours about the clues hidden in the video — those wolves chasing Taylor seem awfully familiar to the "Wolves" Harry sings about in one of One Direction's newest songs — but this we know for sure: at one point, Taylor dramatically tosses a necklace off a cliff. During the months-long relationship, Taylor was often spotted wearing a paper airplane necklace, which she references in the lyrics of “Out of the Woods.” Saying goodbye to Harry helped Taylor find herself and write 1989, which is arguably her best album yet. Any writer knows that sometimes a bad breakup is a blessing in disguise. As the wise Nora Ephron said, “everything is copy”...and sometimes even inspiration for a jaw-dropping music video.
