FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — Iam Tongi, an 18-year-old Decatur High School student, was crowned the winner of American Idol's 21st season after his performance of his original song "I'll Be Seeing You."
Originally from Kahuku, Hawai'i, Tongi made waves from the beginning of the season with his audition video. With now over 16 million views on YouTube Tongi performed "Monsters" by James Blunt during the audition, which was dedicated to his father who recently died a couple months ago.
Due to his father being unable to work, his family was forced to move to Washington state in 2020 as they were "priced out of paradise," due to the expensive living prices in Hawai'i. Although hoping to move back to Hawai'i someday, Tongi said he appreciated the opportunities he has gained from moving to Federal Way.
He has gained immense support from not just Hawai'i and the Polynesian community, but many Washingtonians, especially from the Decatur High community.
