Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong defended his government's decision on March 5, confirming that the singer had signed an "exclusive agreement" with Taylor Swift, who is performing in the country this week. The Singapore government had a deal in place that would prevent Swift from touring in other Southeast Asian countries.
Speaking to reporters at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Melbourne, Prime Minister Lee acknowledged that the government had provided "certain incentives" to Swift, but did not specify the amount.
Prime Minister Lee said government agencies had "negotiated to make Taylor Swift's Singapore performance the only one in Southeast Asia." The prime minister described the negotiations as "highly successful" and said he did not expect them to be an "unfriendly" gesture towards other ASEAN countries.
