Russian teenager Julia Lipnitskaia claimed her first ISU Grand Prix victory at Skate Canada on Saturday with a magnificent, seemingly flawless and technically superb performance that earned a standing ovation. Lipnitskaia and Suzuki both succeeded in landing seven triple jumps, but Lipnitskaia showed the most difficult combinations including a fabulous triple lutz-triple toe to open. "I never really think about winning because you have to keep working, there is always more you can do," Lipnitskaia said. "But I'm very happy everything worked out. With the 2014 Olympic Games just over 100 days off, the diminutive 2012 world junior champion's success should bolster her country's hopes for a medal on home soil in Sochi. Scoring 131.34 for her free program set to the haunting strains of "Shindler's List" and 198.23 in total, the 15-year-old Lipnitskaia overtook overnight leader Gracie Gold of the United States, who slipped to third with 117.20 in the final, 186.65 overall. Adelina Sotnikova of Russia took the lead after the short program at the Cup of China on Friday. The 17-year-old from Moscow skated to "Habanera" and earned a score of 66.03 points. Sotnikova, the 2011 world junior champion, opened with a triple loop-triple loop combination and received high marks for her technical elements.

Carolina Kostner of Italy, the 2012 world champion, fell on her opening combination jump and is second with 62.75. Anna Pogorilaya of Russia is third heading into Saturday's free skate. Pogorilaya, who took the bronze medal at last season's world juniors, is competing in her first senior Grand Prix event.
