(Bloomberg) -- U.S. President Biden is expected to issue a statement soon expressing concerns about Nippon Steel's plan to acquire U.S. Steel. This was revealed by multiple people familiar with the matter. U.S. Steel stocks closed at their steepest decline since June 2020.
The statement is the Biden administration's latest show of support for the United Steelworkers (USW), which is seeking better terms from Nippon Steel. Since taking office as president, Biden has shown a pro-labor stance, and is aiming to win the support of labor unions and union members in his rematch with former US President Trump.
On the other hand, Mr. Trump has declared that he will absolutely block this transaction, and his administration's decision is also influenced by political considerations.
The White House declined to comment. Nippon Steel and US Steel did not respond to requests for comment. Biden's expression of concern was first reported by British newspaper the Financial Times (FT).

(Bloomberg) -- President Biden has called on U.S. Steel to remain a U.S.-owned company. Nippon Steel plans to acquire the company.
"For more than a century, U.S. Steel has been an iconic American steel company. It is critical that we continue to be owned and operated domestically as an American steel company," Biden said in a statement. "It's important to keep American steel companies strong and powered by American steelworkers. I told American steelworkers that I'm with them. That's my heart."
The statement did not mention the ongoing scrutiny of the deal by federal authorities, nor did it say it would block the deal.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Biden's appeal that ``former U.S. President Trump is a threat to democracy'' resonates less with black voters than with other bases, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. It has not penetrated.
Approximately 57% of Biden supporters said that preventing Trump from winning the election was the reason for their support. 30% expressed active support. For the Democratic Party, which wants to increase voter turnout in the presidential election, this suggests that the strategy of focusing on the threat posed by Mr. Trump may be having some effect.
However, 37% of black voters, who make up about one-fifth of Biden's support base, said they would vote to stop Trump, far lower than the 65% increase in white support.

(Bloomberg) -- President Biden, who is seeking re-election in November's U.S. presidential election, has repeatedly highlighted signs of economic recovery and easing inflation as achievements. However, it seems difficult for voters to feel that their household financial burden will be reduced.
This is because the rate of increase in food prices since just before the coronavirus outbreak has increased by more than 25%, which is 5 percentage points higher than the rate of increase in overall consumer prices.
Biden has sought to direct consumer anger at food companies and grocery stores, accusing industry giants of abusing their market power and boosting profit margins at the expense of customers. However, consumers are dissatisfied with the economy through regular grocery shopping (three times a week for the average household) and constantly feel the high cost of living.
Rising food costs are hampering support for Biden, especially among key Democratic bases such as minorities.
