Grace Vanderwaal was just 12 years old when she won the eleventh season of America’s Got Talent with her unique voice and signature ukulele. One year later, Vanderwaal is establishing her own path as artist. She will release her first full-length album, Just the Beginning, in November and is performing at the Austin City Limits Music Festival this weekend.
As she prepares for fans to hear her new album, the young singer is hoping to further develop her own identity in music. “[The album] has a different sound, but it is still true to me. I’m still just experimenting, but I think a lot of people will like it.”
Her performance at this weekend's ACL marks her first visit to a festival of this scale—and her first time performing in Austin. She says her set will be a lot like her, positive and fun. “I’m trying my best to keep it high energy, but I have a couple little surprises in there.”
Those surprises may have to do with sharing some of her unreleased music. Vanderwaal has already released a few songs from her upcoming album, including the infectious “Moonlight” and her most recent song, “Escape My Mind.”
All 12 songs on the album were written by Vanderwaal, an impressive feat for someone who tried out for the talent show that made her famous “just for fun." She adds, "I never expected what happened to happen!”
Windex released their latest commercial -- an emotional rollercoaster in just under three minutes, featuring VanderWaal's endearing song "Beautiful Thing" from her Perfectly Imperfect EP. Leave it to the young singer to make you cry while watching an advertisement for a cleaning product.
The video follows the full-circle relationship between a father and his daughter Lucy, from the delivery room to sending her off to college, eventually seeing her start a family of her own. With VanderWaal’s striking vocals and sincere lyrics providing the soundtrack to the clip, the ad is bound to leave you needing a tissue by the end.
The 13-year-old singer and ukulele player first stole viewers’ hearts when she won America’s Got Talent in 2016. Now her single wish upon receiving her accolade — an elaborate abode built by Treehouse Masters’ Pete Nelson — has been granted.
In this exclusive clip from the Animal Planet show, shared with PEOPLE Now, VanderWaal lays eyes on her outdoor digs for the first time, and her reaction is truly too cute.
