For most of 2017, Swifties wondered where the superstar was hiding and what she was up to, and now after dropping her first solo single in three years all their questions have been answered. Between a messy breakup with ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris, a subsequent high-profile fling with Tom Hiddleston and a very public feud with the Wests, “she felt like her personal life was spinning out of control,” a source close to the star, 27, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “It was draining her and she needed to disappear to reinvent herself. It was time to change things up and take another approach.” The Grammy winner’s scathing pop track, “Look What You Made Me Do,” satirizes her public persona and hits back at her haters, including famous ones like Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West. “Taylor is very excited about her new album. This has been her life for the past few months,” says the source.

Taylor Swift vaults 22-1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated Sept. 16), to become the top musical act in the U.S., leading the list for the first time since the tally dated July 11, 2015. She adds a 32nd total week on top, extending her record for the most weeks spent at No. 1 in the chart's three-year history. The Artist 100, which launched in July 2014, measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity. Swift's leap is powered by her latest single, “Look What You Made Me Do,” which soars 77-1 on the Billboard Hot 100, earning the singer-songwriter her fifth No. 1 and breaking the record, previously set by Adele's “Hello,” for the most U.S. streams for a song in a week by a female artist (84.4 million, according to Nielsen Music). The single also boasts the most weekly sales for any song in 2017 (353,000), besting the year's prior high set by Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" (240,000).

Taylor Swift held a secret listening party at her home in London to debut her new album.
The 27-year-old personally selected 100 fans to the event on Friday, ahead of the release of her sixth studio album Reputation on Nov. 10.
According to the fans who attended the once-in-a-lifetime bash, Swift had stalked the fans on Twitter before extending the invitation to them.
One fan even claimed the Shake It Off singer knew she'd previously been to one of 1989 World Tour dates, and wrote on Friday: "Taylor has been stalking me on Twitter for a year! She knew I went to Nashville for 1989! I cant cope with life (sic)."
