It was just last September that Darci Lynne Farmer won Season 12 of America’s Got Talent for her humorous act as a singing ventriloquist. In her first audition for the judges, the then 12-year-old wowed Mel B who pushed the Golden Buzzer for Darci’s incredible rendition of Ella Fitzgerald’s “Summertime” with puppet Petunia. In 24 hours, the audition video amassed 105 million views on Facebook, but more importantly Darci went straight to the live shows, eventually receiving the most votes ever in the history of an AGT finale. But the show must go on, and toward that end, auditions are being held for the next season of the talent competition in a few key cities across the country. Parade.com spoke to Darci, who urges people to audition. “I just say, “Go for it, and be yourself, even if you’re scared or nervous because you’ll never know what happens if you don’t try.”

It has been three months since you won. How does it feel these days?
It still feels unreal, but at the same time, just like the most awesome time of my life.
Is there a highlight or a moment that you will always remember of somebody you got to meet or something you got to do because you won?
I was really excited about meeting Grace VanderWaal because she had been to AGT that year when we were performing. I didn’t get a chance to take a picture with her. I was super sad, but she came back to perform, and I was like, “Yes,” so I got to meet and take a picture, and she was very, very nice and kind to me and gave me a little advice. It was pretty cool.

Tell me a little bit about what you are going to be doing going forward. I know you have the Darci Lynne & Friends Live Tour coming up. I’m super excited about that. We’re kicking it off in the New Year in Atlanta, Georgia on January 13. I also have Pelican212 on the road with me. They’re a family band, and they’re absolutely incredible. So I’m excited. Any dates beyond that? I have Foxwood, Connecticut on January 20, Medford, Massachusetts on January 21 and then in February, it’s Springfield, Missouri and Kansas City, Missouri. Then I go all the way through May. You’re in the seventh grade now, how are you juggling school with your tour? It’s actually kind of nice because we’re only going to my tour dates on the weekends, so I won’t miss any school. We planned it that way.

So what did you splurge on with your prize money? I know you were talking about getting your mom a dishwasher, and you were talking about getting a Pug. Did either of those things happen?
We were planning on getting my mom a dishwasher, but something better came up. GE Appliances has agreed to give my mom a whole kitchen’s worth of new appliances and a washer and dryer and all I need to do is shout them out.
Right? We told her the surprise on stage at my Oklahoma show, and she cried. I knew that she would.
What about you and your Pug?
You better ask my mom about that.
Well, maybe when you stop travelling so much.
Misty Farmer, Darci’s mom: That’s what I said. You have to be home to have a dog.
