Naomi Osaka vs. Ashleigh Barty | Full Match | 2019 China Open Final The Japanese cemented her star status with a second straight grand slam title at the Australian Open in January having clinched her maiden major at the 2018 US Open. But she struggled with the attention that came with being world No.1 and came up short in the year's other three grand slams. Osaka went nearly eight months without winning a title, but two victories in two consecutive WTA Tour events have given her serious momentum for the WTA Finals in Shenzhen, China. So what's the secret behind Osaka's uptick in form? "I think (my) mindset," she told CNN. "I think I'm more confident in myself than I was before. "Before I would have had a little bit of self-doubt, which I still do, but this time, not as much."

Naomi Osaka, two-time Grand Slam champion, has hired famous Belgian coach Wim Fissette to be her new coach, as confirmed by noted tennis expert Ben Rothenberg on his Twitter account. Osaka won the US Open last year and Australian Open earlier this year under the guidance of Sascha Bajin but split with him in February. She then worked with American Jermaine Jenkins till the US Open. During the last part of this season, when she regained her form by winning titles in Osaka and Beijing, she was working with her father Leonard Francois. The 39-year-old Fissette has worked with several top women on the WTA Tour in recent years - including Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters, Simona Halep, Angelique Kerber and Johanna Konta, with several of the players achieving some of their best performances under Fissette as noted below. - Clijsters, who was making a comeback to the WTA Tour as a mother when she worked with Fissette, won the US Open as a wildcard entrant, winning 3 Grand Slam titles in all and reached the No. 1 ranking with Fissette - German Sabine Lisicki reached her first and so far, only, Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon in 2013 under his guidance - Halep reached her then th career-best ranking of No.2 in 2014 while Konta became the first British woman since Virginia Wade in 1978 to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals and reached a career-high No. 4 in the rankings under Fissettte - Kerber won her third Grand Slam singles title in 2018 and climbed back into the world's Top 3 during her time with the Belgian.

Extended Highlights: Naomi Osaka vs. Ashleigh Barty | 2019 China Open Final
Osaka would have been aware of the Belgiums ability to train champions, and that would have been an overwhelming reason for her getting the gig. During her career so far, Fissette has helped guide Kim Clijsters to three Grand Slam titles. As well as this, she has also worked with Petra Kvitova, Angelique Kerber and Simona Halep with their successes.
It hasn’t been the best of years for Osaka, despite the season starting extremely well in Australia. She split with her previous coach Jermaine Jenkins in September after a lousy defence of her US Open title. Jenkins only held the role for seven months after he replaced Sascha Bajin. The decision to get rid of Bajin was a shock in the tennis world, as it came just weeks after her success in the Australian Open.
The decision undoubtedly had an impact on her exits at the French Open and Wimbledon. She was knocked out in the first round in London, and couldn’t get past the third round at Roland Garros. These defeats came just months after her success in Australia; which saw Osaka win back to back Grand Slams. That first success at the US Open against Serena Williams put her on course to be the first-ever Asian world number one.
Osaka’s Hopes For The New Season The Japanese player will end the current season locked in third in the world rankings. Her father had been used in the coaching role prior to announcing Fissette as the new coach. Osaka will remain one of the best players on the women’s circuit, and her 2020 dismay could have just been down to poor decision making and bad luck.
Her quality on the court can’t be overlooked. She was the first player since 2001 to win their first two Grand Slam titles in consecutive events. Osaka will be back in 2020, and her route to greatness will begin at the Australian Open. With Fissette and her reputation of moulding champions in her corner, then it would be extremely difficult not to see Osaka improve on her recent Grand Slam showings.
She did end the season with a bit of success at the Chinese Open. She beat Bianca Andreescu and Caroline Wozniacki on her way to the final, before seeing off French Open champion Ashleigh Barty in the final. There is still so much more to come from the 22-year-old, and next season could be a big one for her.
