Jewish voters furious at Democrats’ defense of Rep. Ilhan Omar say they’re done with the party that has held their support for generations. “We felt we had a home there,” said Mark Schwartz, the Democratic deputy mayor of solidly blue Teaneck, NJ. “And now we feel like we have to check our passports.” Jordan Manor of Manhattan, who calls himself a “gay Jewish Israeli-American,” laments, “The party I thought cared about me seems to disregard me when it comes to my Jewish identity.” Mark Dunec, a consultant in Livingston, NJ who ran for Congress as a Democrat in 2014, says, “I’m physically afraid for myself and for my family,” adding, “I see my own party contributing to the rise of anti-Semitism in the United States.” Omar, a freshman congresswoman from Minnesota, sparked the firestorm in February for using anti-Jewish tropes: saying that support for Israel was “all about the Benjamins” and accusing Jewish-American legislators of “dual loyalty.” Many, including some fellow Democrats, deemed her comments anti-Semitic — but the party’s lefty activists pushed back.

Rep. Ilhan Omar's controversial comments about Israel and Jews have driven a wedge through her Democratic Party in Congress. But in her home district in Minnesota, her words are bringing some Jewish and Muslim activists, constituents and leaders together ... in denunciation. Omar Jamal, Steve Hunegs, Mohamed Ahmed and Avi Olitzky agree on the characterization of language Omar used. When Omar talked about Israel "hypnotizing" the world, they said it was anti-Semitic. When she said American support for Israel was "all about the Benjamins baby," referring to $100 notes, they said it was anti-Semitic. And when she questioned whether American lawmakers and lobbyists had loyalty to Israel, they said it was anti-Semitic. Local leaders want her to understand why her words were causing so much pain.

A freshman House Democrat apologized to his Jewish constituents during a district town hall this week for comments Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) made questioning U.S.-Israel policy that critics considered anti-Semitic. Rep. Max Rose (D-N.Y.), who is Jewish, said he was “horrified” and “sad” when Omar recently said pro-Israel groups “push for allegiance to a foreign country,” a comment many Jewish lawmakers said invoked the myth of dual loyalty to the United States and Israel. “As a young congressman, I’ve got to tell you I’m sorry,” Rose told a crowd organized by the Council of Jewish Organizations of Staten Island, according to Jewish Insider. “You sent me to Congress to take responsibility. You sent me to Congress to have your back," he continued. “And I failed you. Because I know that Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s comments really caused you all a lot of pain by bringing up anti-Semitic tropes.” At the same time, Rose maintained that Omar shouldn't lose her spot on the House Foreign Affairs Committee — at least for now. House Republicans, including top GOP leaders, have called for her removal from the panel. “We have got to show her that there is a pathway for her to do the right thing, and we have to be vigilant towards that. Believe me, she understands that that’s a possibi

Ilhan Omar has faced hundreds of protesters waving Israeli flags in California following her controversial remarks about Israel. Omar was met by the group of angry protesters as she attended an annual fundraiser for a Muslim American advocacy group in Woodland Hills on Saturday. Protesters waved Israeli and pro-Trump flags outside a Hilton hotel where the Council of American-Islamic Relations event was being held.

Patrick Carlineo, from Addison, New York, was arrested on Friday and charged with making a threatening phone call to Omar’s office. According to the FBI, Carlineo told a staff member: “Do you work for the Muslim Brotherhood? Why are you working for her, she’s a fucking terrorist. I’ll put a bullet in her fucking skull.” Though Fox News was not mentioned in the complaint against Carlineo, the New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez drew a direct link between controversial remarks made by presenter Jeanine Pirro and the threat against Omar. Last month Pirro attacked Omar’s wearing of the hijab, asking if it was indicative of “her adherence to sharia law, which in itself is antithetical to the United States constitution”. In a tweet on Saturday, Ocasio-Cortez implied there was a causal link between Pirro’s comments and the death threat against Omar. “Understand,” she wrote, “when Jeanine Pirro goes on Fox [and] rallies people to think hijabs are threatening, it leads to this.” She also appealed to people to “talk policy, not personal”.
