Downing Street attempted to withhold sensitive intelligence from Boris Johnson when he became foreign secretary, the BBC has learned.
It is understood Theresa May and some in the intelligence community had worries about Mr Johnson's ability to keep information confidential.
Sources close to Mr Johnson said he had access to everything he needed to see.
Asked whether information had ever been held back from him, the Tory leadership frontrunner said this was "not true".
Pressed about the matter at a Conservative leadership hustings in Darlington, Mr Johnson said he would not comment further on national security issues but he was "extremely dubious about the provenance" of the reports.

The existing danger for Johnson is that if Trump lauds his elevation too much, he will find himself portrayed not as prime minister, but as the governor of the 51st state. If the consequence of Brexit is obeisance to Trump, that is not a good look, including among the patriotic classes that do not view national liberation in terms of swopping vassalage to Brussels for Washington. On the other hand, if Johnson can show his friendship with the Trump family means he can persuade the president to de-escalate the crisis that would be a bonus. In Tuesday night’s TV debate between Hunt and Johnson, both candidates are likely to be asked whether they would support someone from outside the diplomatic service taking up the Washington job, so by implication accepting there is some merit in Trump’s criticisms of the British civil service.

The favourite to become the next Prime Minister Boris Johnson was heckled during a hustings event. It followed a question about Britain's ambassador to the United States, Kim Darroch, who resigned in a furore over leaked memos. Darroch quit after Donald Trump labelled him "stupid" and "wacky" following the leaking of the memos in which he branded the U.S. president's administration inept. Johnson, a former foreign minister, repeatedly failed to back Darroch during a previous televised debate.
