Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a one-off cash boost of £1.8bn for NHS hospitals in England.
Of this, almost £1bn will be available immediately to go towards new equipment and upgrades to 20 hospitals.
Writing in the Sunday Times, Mr Johnson said he was "determined to deliver" the promises of the Brexit referendum campaign and increase NHS spending.
But Labour said it fell "significantly short" of the amount needed by the NHS and would not reverse years of cuts.
The money is coming from the Treasury and is not a re-allocation of funds from the Department of Health.

A man who tried to prosecute Boris Johnson over claims he lied during the 2016 EU referendum has lost his bid to take the case to the Supreme Court. Marcus Ball accused the prime minister of "abusing public trust" by claiming the NHS could get £350m extra a week after Brexit. The High Court threw out his case in June - but Mr Ball applied for leave to appeal to the UK's highest court. On Wednesday, Lady Justice Rafferty rejected his application. The proceedings were started at Westminster Magistrates' Court in May when Mr Bell applied for a summons accusing Mr Johnson of three allegations of misconduct in public office. Mr Johnson's lawyers have always rejected claims he acted improperly or dishonestly in any way and challenged the case at the High Court. Mr Ball could still continue his legal battle by applying directly to the Supreme Court, challenging the decision in the European Courts or making another attempt at a prosecution.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday called on Germany and France to compromise on Brexit, cautioning that the United Kingdom would be ready to leave the European Union without a deal on Oct. 31 if necessary.
"We will be ready to come out on Oct. 31 - deal or no deal," Johnson told reporters. "Of course, our friends and partners on the other side of the Channel are showing a little bit of reluctance to change their position - that's fine - I am confident that they will."
When asked what his visit later this week to Berlin and Paris would achieve, Johnson said: "I hope that they will compromise - they have seen that the UK parliament has three times rejected the Withdrawal Agreement, the backstop just doesn't work, it is not democratic. I hope they will see fit to compromise."
"I want a deal, we are ready to work with our friends and partners to get a deal but if you want a good deal for the UK you must simultaneously get ready to come out without one," Johnson said. (Reporting by Guy Faulconbridge)

BORIS Johnson got a huge Brexit boost from Angela Merkel tonight as she suggested it was possible to get a new Irish border solution in 30 days.
The PM's first overseas trip got off to a flying start as the German Chancellor gave him a fresh deadline to come up with fresh ideas to replace the hated backstop.

Shutting down Parliament - known as prorogation - happens after the prime minister advises the Queen to do it. The decision to do it now is highly controversial because opponents say it would stop MPs being able to play their full democratic part in the Brexit process. ] ] The PM says he wants to leave the EU on 31 October with a deal, but it is "do or die" and he is willing to leave without one rather than miss the deadline. That position has prompted a number of opposition MPs to come together to try to block a possible no deal, and on Tuesday they announced that they intended to use parliamentary process to do so.
