US tennis sensation Amanda Anisimova has set the sport alight with her incredible French Open run, dumping out defending champion Simona Halep to reach the semifinals on Thursday. http://instagram.com/p/BwR1kKfFhgW The rising star has already posted a career best performance at Roland-Garros by entering the last four, but will she be able to achieve even more, and is she capable of repeating Maria Sharapova’s stunning success by winning a Grand Slam aged just 17? http://instagram.com/p/BuuM78VntiF Born to Russian parents who emigrated to the US in 1998, Anisimova started to play tennis when she was just three. Two years later she had already debuted in kids competitions, beating competitors who were several years older.

Amanda Anisimova had made a name for herself a year ago when she reached the fourth round at Indian Wells following a win over Petra Kvitova. With a foot injury suffered in Miami, Anisimova was forced to skip all the action in April, May, June and July, finding the form again and kicking off 2019 from inside the top-100. Following the fourth round result in Melbourne, the young American claimed the first title in Bogota in April, revealing her abilities on the slowest surface and cementing that in Paris where she became the youngest Roland Garros semi-finalist since Nicole Vaidisova in 2006! With a favorable draw, the hard-hitting young gun toppled Harmony Tan and the struggling world no. 11 Aryna Sabalenka for the place in the third round and she had no intentions of stopping there, berating Irina-Camelia Begu to enter the last 16 without losing a set. In another encounter where she was the favorite, Amanda ousted a qualifier Aliona Bolsova to enter the quarters, setting the clash with the defending champion Simona Halep whom she beat 6-2, 6-4 after a brilliant performance that propelled her into the semis, the youngest one in Paris in 13 years. In the battle for the first Grand Slam final at such a young age, Amanda lost 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 to Ashleigh Barty, performing a miracle comeback in the first set and wasting a 3-0 advantage in the second, allowing Ashleigh to take the momentum from that point and failing to score another big win and reach the title match.

Now the WTA Tour is experiencing a moment of chaos that lasts from the triumph of Serena Williams to the Australian Open 2017. Between Serena's motherhood and her return, no real leader has emerged but there have been multiple winners, with a very large group of young players. Among them, Amanda Anisimova is perhaps the brightest star. Although she has still to complete her tennis skills (she is only 17 years old) she has already shown that she has potential that is out of the ordinary. It is no coincidence that at her young age Anisimova has already reached a semi-final in a Slam, and she already won her first WTA final this year. Amanda could (yes, it is an obligation to use the conditional) become the star that will guide US women's tennis in the future. She has all the physical and technical qualities to reach great goals. It won't be easy; now she is under the spotlight, and she must be very good at managing expectations and pressure. But if these that we have just seen in the past weeks are the premises, then she will have a great future. We can already imagine how, in the coming years, her rivalry with Bianca Andreescu and Dayana Yastremska may be inflaming the courts' crowds.

The breakthrough season for Amanda Anisimova continued unabated on Thursday as the 17-year-old American moved into the Mallorca Open quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-4 second-round defeat of France’s Alizé Cornet. In the first meeting between the players, No.5 seed Anisimova dispatched former World No.11 Cornet after 75 minutes of play to make the elite eight in the first grass-court WTA event of her career. "It feels amazing to be in the quarterfinals at my first grass tournament, and I’ve been enjoying playing here a lot, and playing in front of the people in Spain," Anisimova said, following her victory. "It’s been a very enjoyable week." "It was really hot and my opponent was playing very well, so it was quite a battle, especially in the end," Anisimova continued. "I’m really happy with how I was able to play in the end, and my performance, I had to make it rise." The week continues a sterling run of form for Anisimova, who won her maiden WTA singles title in Bogota in April and defeated defending champion Simona Halep to reach her first Grand Slam semifinal at Roland Garros in her most recent event.

Amanda Anisimova had amazed tennis world after reaching the semi-final at Roland Garros, keeping the same rhythm on grass to book the quarter-final spot at Mallorca. The young American stormed over Alize Cornet 6-2, 6-4 in 75 minutes, fending off seven out of eight break points and delivering four breaks from nine opportunities to keep the scoreboard under control. Settling into a nice rhythm, Anisimova raced towards a 4-0 lead, breaking Cornet in games one and three and saving four break points in game four to gather even bigger momentum. Amanda held with ease in games six and eight for a 6-2, conquering the first three games of the second set as a well and bringing the victory home from there with a hold in game ten, previously wasting one match point on the return in the previous game.
