Avril Lavigne has praised Billie Eilish and reflected on her iconic throwback tracks like “SK8er Boi” in a new interview about her most recent album and tour. As Lavigne begins her first tour in five years to promote her latest album Head Above Water, she spoke to Billboard about her battle with Lyme Disease and what it’s like to be back on the road. http://instagram.com/p/Bz1GZZJFvG4 She spoke about her love for rising young artists like Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy and pop star Eilish, who she met in Los Angeles during one of the 17-year-old’s shows. Eilish previously posted a photo of when she met Lavigne at the gig. She captioned it, ““THANK YOU FOR MAKING ME WHAT I AM.” She’s also said that Avril Lavigne was “everything” to her growing up, which is why she’s had such a lasting impact on the teen singer. Now, Lavigne commented to Billboard about how much she appreciates Eilish’s kind words. “It’s an honor any time — especially someone as talented and cool and creative as Billie — mentions that I’ve had an impact on their music career,” Lavigne said. “My approach was always just like, I’m going to be myself, write the songs that I want to write, dress how I want to dress — because when I entered the industry, everyone was showing their bellies and had a bunch of dancers around them and were bubblegum pop, and I was so different. I was dressing in Dickies and Converse and like a dude, and playing loud guitar in my songs.”

With a toss of her hair and pop of her hip, Avril Lavigne smirked at her audience. “Don’t pretend, I think you know I’m d--- precious,” she sang, delivering her “Hey Mickey"-esque 2007 single “Girlfriend.” “And hell yeah, I’m the (expletive) princess!” In 2002, 17-year-old Lavigne led the way for pop music to get a bit grungier, delivering a middle finger with chipped black nail polish, bubblegum sneer and skater aesthetic in place of the high-gloss, tightly choreographed, teen boy fantasy of the female pop star. Her debut album, “Let Go,” noted for its authenticity and viewed as an industry disruption, went four times platinum, making it the top-selling debut of the year while also inspiring an entire generation of young women to sport neckties with tank tops and, for many, becoming a gateway artist who gave them their earliest taste of punk’s influence. That youthful, free-spirited delinquency continued to carry through the albums that succeeded “Let Go," even as sweeping, lovelorn piano ballads worked to offset it. But in 2014, a year after releasing her self-titled fifth album and not long after her 30th birthday, Lavigne was diagnosed with Lyme disease and music was placed on the back burner. There was a time she, and her fans, thought she would die. Five years later, Lavigne’s on the tail end of her “Head Above Water” tour — her first since being diagnosed — which hit the Chicago Theater Thursday night in support of her sixth studio LP (released in February) of the same name. It was also the eve of her 35th birthday — we know this because she was serenaded with “Happy Birthday” not once, but twice.

Avril Lavigne welcomed an addition to her family tonight onstage at Toronto’s Meridian Hall, when her cousin Bernie proposed to his girlfriend. The 75-minute set was special anyway — her return to perform in Canada after a five-year absence, during which she had to gain back her health after contracting the debilitating Lyme Disease. Toronto also holds a special place for the Napanee-raised pop singer; she bought her first house in the city as a teenager when her debut album, Let Go, took off in 2002 Clearly elated by the fan response and performing again, the 35-year-old, who is touring behind her new album, Head Above Water, revealed she had family and friends in the house, and began talking about her dad’s identical twin brother, who has one son who looks like her brother and a daughter who looks like her, she said. She has posted photos of the four of them on her social media in the past. “Well I am actually up here for a reason,” he said, dipping into his pocket, then getting down on one knee. While most of us couldn’t hear the proposal, we saw her nod and embrace, while Avril clapped. Bernie slipped the ring on his fiancee's finger. “She said yes,” exclaimed Avril, raising her arm in the air. “Welcome to the family,” she said, giving her a hug.
