Donald Trump stepped onto North Korean soil Sunday as he met Pyongyang's leader Kim Jong Un in the Demilitarized Zone dividing the peninsula, in a symbolic diplomatic spectacle and a first for any American president. After shaking hands with Kim over the line that marks where their two countries and their allies fought each other to a standstill in the 1950-53 Korean War, Trump walked for several steps into North Korean territory, before another handshake. The two men then walked into Seoul's territory together -- pausing on the line for photographers -- where they were joined by South Korean President Moon Jae-in. "It's a great day for the world and it's an honour for me to be here," Trump said. "A lot of great things are happening." The impromptu meeting in the DMZ -- which came after Trump issued an invitation on Twitter on Saturday -- comes with negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington over the North's nuclear arsenal at a deadlock.

The “first daughter” can be seen in images broadcast on North Korean TV of the discussion between the US president and Mr Kim.
The revelation Ms Trump was included in the talks will further fuel a growing controversy about the 37-year-old’s role in the White House.
Officially, she is only an advisor to the president and has said her focus is on women’s economic empowerment and skills development in the workplace.
But her participation in the high-level diplomacy of the North Korean summit came only days after she was seen taking part in the G20 conference in Osaka, Japan.
A video released by the French presidency showed Ms Trump attempting to butt into a conversation between Theresa May, Emmanuel Macron and Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund.

North Korea has accused the US of being "hell-bent on hostile acts", despite a recent agreement between the two countries to resume nuclear talks.
Pyongyang's delegation to the United Nations said on Wednesday that the US was "obsessed with sanctions".
This comes days after the countries' leaders held a historic meeting in the heavily fortified demilitarised zone (DMZ) which divides the two Koreas.
Donald Trump became the first sitting US president to set foot in the North.
And after talks that lasted for almost an hour, the pair agreed to set up teams to resume stalled negotiations on denuclearisation.
But the latest North Korean statement marks a shift in tone and a return to the angry exchanges that have marred relations between the countries in recent times.
North Korea also accused Washington of attempting to "undermine the peaceful atmosphere" on the Korean peninsula.

President Donald Trump shook hands with Kim Jong Un on Sunday and took 20 steps into North Korea, making history as the first sitting US leader to set foot in the hermit kingdom.
Trump crossed the low stone curb separating the North and South at 3:45 p.m. local time, making his way alongside a grinning Kim into a country that's long been a global pariah for its nuclear ambitions and dismal record on human rights.
The encounter at the heavily fortified Korean Demilitarized Zone -- their third in person -- came a day after Trump raised the prospect of a border handshake in a tweet and declared he'd have "no problem" stepping into North Korea.
"Would you like me to step across?" Trump asked Kim as they shook hands. "I am OK with it." While inside North Korean territory, Trump and Kim shook hands and patted each other's backs before returning across the border to the South after about a minute.
"I never expected to meet you at this place," Kim, who appeared overjoyed in the moment, told Trump through an interpreter.
Later, Trump said he was "proud to step over the line" and thanked Kim for the meeting. He invited him to the White House, though later acknowledged such a visit would likely not come soon.
