As California Sen. Kamala Harris shatters one of the highest glass ceilings with her historic election as vice president, her husband is breaking barriers of his own. Doug Emhoff will not only become the first "second gentleman" but will also be the first Jewish person married to a president or vice president. Emhoff, 56, was often seen on the campaign trail with his wife, and just as her supporters proudly declared themselves part of the #KHive, Emhoff has his own #DougHive fans on social media. Emhoff was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.; his father was a women's shoe designer who moved the family from New Jersey to Los Angeles when Emhoff was in high school. Emhoff went on to attend law school at the University of Southern California and worked as an entertainment lawyer for roughly 30 years. Most recently, he was a partner with the firm DLA Piper but took a leave of absence to focus on the campaign. Emhoff was previously married to Kerstin Emhoff, and the two have two children. Years after their divorce, Emhoff was set up on a blind date by filmmaker Reginald Hudlin, a client, with then-California Attorney General Harris. "We went on a blind date, and we've been together ever since," Emhoff said during a conversation with Chasten Buttigieg this summer. Harris and Emhoff married in 2014. With the marriage, Harris gained two stepchildren, Cole and Ella, who call her Momala. "I was already hooked on Doug, but I believe it was Cole and Ella who reeled me in," Harris wrote in Elle in 2019. "One of the keys to my relationship with Cole and Ella is their mom. We are friends," Harris told CNN's Dana Bash this summer. "We have a very modern family." It's not clear yet what role Emhoff will carve out for himself once Harris assumes office.

Douglas Emhoff, the husband of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, is leaving his law firm, DLA Piper, for a role in the Biden administration.
Emhoff will officially leave DLA Piper by Inauguration Day on Jan. 20, a Biden campaign spokesperson confirmed. Emhoff took a leave of absence from his firm in August as Harris ran on the Democratic ticket.
"Mr. Emhoff is working with the Biden-Harris transition team to develop the portfolio he will focus on to support the work of the administration," the spokesperson said.
He will be the first man to be a spouse of a vice president after Harris made history as the first woman elected vice president.
Emhoff is a partner in the firm’s Los Angeles office, and his firm profile says, “Mr. Emhoff is currently on a leave of absence from the firm.” The same note was on his profile in August when he first announced his leave.
He joined DLA Piper in October 2017 and his specialties include media, sports and entertainment, as well as intellectual property and technology, litigation, arbitration and investigations.
He is licensed to practice in California and Washington, D.C. DLA Piper has a lobbying arm, but Emhoff is not a lobbyist.

The vice-president, Kamala Harris, broke a 50/50 tie by casting a vote in favour of the Democratic measure, which sends it to the House of Representatives for final approval. It marked the first time Harris, in her role as president of the Senate, cast a tie-breaking vote after being sworn in as the first female vice-president on 20 January.
The House passed its own budget measure on Wednesday. Congress can now work to write a bill that can be passed by a simple majority in both houses, which are controlled by Democrats. Mid-March has been suggested as a likely date by which the measure could be passed, a point at which enhanced unemployment benefits will expire if Congress does not act.
The vote came at 5.30am on Friday at the end of a marathon Senate debate session, known among senators as a “vote-a-rama”, a procedure whereby they can theoretically offer unlimited amendments.
Biden is scheduled to meet with Democratic House leaders and committee chairs early on Friday morning to discuss the Covid economic stimulus, and is expected to make public remarks on the progress at an 11.45am EST (1645 GMT) briefing.

Vice President Kamala Harris is under fire for laughing when asked about the deadly chaos in Afghanistan — before Singapore’s prime minister pointed out during a press conference with Harris that the Biden administration’s exit plan went “awry.”
The VP — heavily criticized for her delay in addressing the disaster that started after the US pulled out despite the Taliban’s resurgence — was already grinning widely when she approached reporters Friday.
A reporter attempted to ask about her “response on Americans” — but the VP cut her off before she could finish.
“Hold on, hold on — slow down, everybody!” Harris said, before letting out her now-notorious laugh, shaking her shoulders as she chuckled.
The VP finally controlled herself to insist that the Biden administration “couldn’t have a higher priority right now” than Afghanistan.
Vice President Kamala Harris nervously laughed after being asked about the crisis in Afghanistan.
