Japanese pop-metal band BABYMETAL will play 10 shows at Tokyo's famed Nippon Budokan venue next year as part of the group's 10th-anniversary celebration. The shows, which will mark the final chapter of the "Metal Resistance" era, will kick off with two dates in January (19 and 20) and four concerts in February (16, 17, 19 and 20) before continuing later in the year.
BABYMETAL previously played Budokan twice in early 2014 ("Red Night" and "Black Night"), becoming the youngest female artists ever to perform at the legendary indoor arena.
BABYMETAL's Moametal told Billboard about the upcoming concerts: "I consider the Budokan shows as the period we properly display everything we've gained in our journey over the past 10 years, and our gratitude to everyone who encountered us along the way."
BABYMETAL recently released a greatest-hits album titled "10 Babymetal Years". Ten songs are featured on ten special editions of the LP, including a Regular Edition released on CD and vinyl; First Press Limited Edition A, containing a Blu-ray with all 16 of BABYMETAL's music videos on it; First Press Limited Edition B, which comes in a special vinyl-size CD cover containing ten newly taken photos of Su-metal and Moametal; and First Press Limited Edition C, which includes a Blu-ray featuring 10 Legend Movies, a special video of ten songs chosen by fans in the 10 Legend Songs Tournament. Members of the BABYMETAL fan club, The One, can also purchase The One Edition A, which includes a karuta battle set (Japanese playing cards); and The One Edition B, which comes with the "Chronicle Set", featuring a video containing interviews with the bandmembers. Also being made available are the Su-metal Edition, Moametal Edition, and Kobametal Edition, each of which comes with all three different Prophet Cards included in all the other editions mentioned and each with unique serial codes. These three bandmember editions also contain ten songs chosen respectively by each member of their personal favorite tracks the band has released. A special X Edition will arrive at a later date and will come with a mystery item that "Only The Fox God Knows", which will serve as the final piece of the puzzle to "10 Babymetal Years".
A book about the first ten years of BABYMETAL, "Bessatsu Kadokawa Souryoku Tokushuu", was released in Japan in October. It contains a long interview with Su-metal and Moametal as well as never-before-heard stories from band producer Kobametal from BABYMETAL's decade-long history, photos taken from live shows, a discussion between Demon Kakka and Kobametal, and much more.
BABYMETAL's third studio album, "Metal Galaxy", was released in October 2019 via earMUSIC/Edel. The follow-up to 2016's "Metal Resistance" is based on the concept of "The Odyssey Of Metal Galaxy".
"Metal Galaxy" hit No. 19 in the U.K. official album chart, No. 1 No. 1 on Billboard's Top Rock Albums chart, becoming the first Asian act to land at No. 1, and No. 18 on the German chart.

The concerts, which are set to kick off on January 19, will celebrate the pop metal sensation’s 10-year anniversary as a band. While much of the world has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, which in turn has left the live music industry in disarray in most countries, Japan’s commendable efforts in controlling virus means these shows can take place. Six of BABYMETAL’s 10 concerts have been announced so far, beginning with a pair of shows on January 19 and 20. The next four shows will take place February 16, 17, 19 and 20, with details on the remaining four gigs still to be revealed. BABYMETAL’s Moametal told Billboard Japan: “I consider the Budokan shows as the period we properly display everything we’ve gained in our journey over the past 10 years, and our gratitude to everyone who encountered us along the way.” Even with Japan’s low number of coronavirus cases, there will be several restrictions in place at the concerts in order to create a safe environment. Fans will have their temperatures checked at the door and be required to wear face masks at all times in the venue. Additionally, gig-goers are being asked to refrain from cheering loudly or talking in an effort to contain any spread of the coronavirus. Tickets will only be sold for half of the Budokan’s capacity, with seats being spaced out throughout the venue to implement social distancing. You can purchase tickets via the band’s official website.

Babymetal fans who missed out on the Japanese idol metal outfit's livestream concert event last week will get another chance to catch it when 10 Babymetal Budokan gets an encore showing on July 24. The performance will also emerge as a live album.
The album will be available on both CD and vinyl versions, now available to pre-order in bundles containing tickets to the upcoming rebroadcast. The 10 Babymetal Budokan event was filmed over several shows at Tokyo's Budokan arena earlier this year. While seemingly signifying the end of the act's Metal Galaxy era, it also marked Babymetal's 10th anniversary.
"On October 10 of last year," the band's website says, "Babymetal entered into their 10th anniversary year, and as the finale of this very special year, Babymetal will release a live album of 10 Babymetal Budokan, a series of 10 performances which unfolded from January to April of this year."
After the shows were initially announced, Babymetal vocalist and dancer Moametal told Billboard, "I consider the Budokan shows as the period we properly display everything we've gained in our journey over the past 10 years, and our gratitude to everyone who encountered us along the way."
Last year, Babymetal released a compilation album chronicling their first decade, 10 Babymetal Years. The record was included in a gold vinyl edition alongside the band's first NFTs in April.
Get Budokan livestream tickets, album pre-orders and more information at babymetal.live. The 10 Babymetal Budokan encore showing will air at 3PM ET on July 24.

The fact these are the first shows Babymetal has played in the UK as an official trio for almost five years feels like Big News. While they have long had a stand-in third member in the form of the Avengers dancers (Momoko Okazaki herself being one of these), the addition of "Momometal" as an official member lends a natural sense of cohesion to Babymetal's performance.
“We are so excited to be back at WEMBLEY ARENA,” Su-Metal offers, a canny reminder that this band have been playing to thousands of people almost since their first appearance in the UK. The next 40 minutes flies by in a blitzkrieg of sweeping riffs, blaring synths, soaring symphoncs and utterly captivating stagecraft as the trio show off a near-inhuman level of precision in their choreography.
For all the infectious, hyperactive energy of their early songs, its new cuts Divine Attack - Shingeki and Monochrome that feel the most enormous, absolutely titanic tunes that make songs like Gimme Chocolate!! feel almost cartoonish in comparison, the audience clearly braying for more as the band depart.
Lordi. Babymetal. Sabaton. All three bands have been dismissed at points of their careers due to perceived gimmicks - the "monster" band, the "Kawaii" band, the "tank" band - but a sold-out, full capacity Wembley Arena proves that no matter what dismissive statements you might make against them, there are at least 12,000 fans who prove these bands are a very beloved part of the heavy metal firmament.
First up for metal's wildest tour of 2023 are Lordi, the Finnish shock rockers who took top spot at Eurovision in 2006 and set a precedent for many hopeful metal acts for years to come (including Voyager and Lord Of The Lost, who will be representing Australia and Germany respectively this year).
At their best, Lordi are purveyors of spooky shanties designed for mass consumption, but Wembley seems somewhat subdued in response for their opening set. The cheers of approval for the band's arrival don't quite mesh with the lack of mass sing-alongs as the band tuck into a short but sweet set, but nonetheless a combination of nostalgia and brilliant songwriting ensures we feel the magic of Would You Love A Monsterman?, Blood Red Sandman and Devil Is A Loser, with a thumping Hard Rock Halleujah making us feel like its 2006 all over again.
