Tomi (34) 🇫🇮 Why do you like BABYMETAL? That’s a hard question. I’ve been following them since the beginning. I liked their song Doki Doki morning, back when I discovered it, I was like “wow”. This was my first encounter with this type of music, before that, I was only familiar with the standard metal. What bands do you normally listen to? Arch Enemy, Metallica, all those typical ones. Does that mean BABYMETAL is the only Japanese band you listen to? I think so… Actually, no. I also listen to LADYBABY. Both are “BABY” bands [laughs]. Would you be embarrassed telling people you listen to BABYMETAL? No, because they wouldn’t know what it is in the first place. So I can’t really tell them what I’m listening to. Maybe if they Google it later they will ask me what it is. I wouldn’t be embarrassed showing a video of BABYMETAL to my co-workers [laughs], but for any other cases, it depends on who it is. What about your parents? I’ve shown them but they don’t care, so whatever [laughs]. Linn (17) 🇸🇪 Why do you like BABYMETAL? Because they combine the best of both worlds. The metal in it is enhanced by the “kawaii” from Jpop. They’ve done it in a very creative way and I really like that. What bands do you normally listen to? A handful of emo bands like My Chemical Romance, just regular rock bands [laughs], and some Kpop like BTS or Red Velvet. How would you define “kawaii metal”? It’s a fusion between Japanese idol pop and metal. So in terms of idol pop, maybe something like AKB48? I’m not really that much into idol pop besides BABYMETAL, so I’m not completely sure. What do your parents think about BABYMETAL? They like their more toned-down kind of songs such as THE ONE, or Shine, those that aren’t too eccentric or overly kawaii [laughs].

Last night, BABYMETAL kicked off the UK leg of their METAL GALAXY WORLD TOUR in Glasgow, Scotland, with support from Southampton goth-punks Creeper. The Japanese kawaii metallers performed a 13-song set (including METAL GALAXY intro Future Metal) at The Barrowlands on what is actually the band’s first full UK headline tour – having only previously been there before for one-off shows and festival appearances. Speaking to Kerrang! last year about the tour, MOAMETAL enthused: “Extending both my arms as far as I can would not be enough to illustrate the size of my excitement. I can’t wait to see our fans again. Every time we have the chance to visit new places, see new people and to have new experiences, we get so excited. I also look forward to trying out new food. Just thinking about it all makes me so happy.” SU-METAL also added that BABYMETAL’s highlight of 2019 was performing at the O2 Academy Brixton, revealing: “We played there before, but I felt that the audience was closer this time, and I felt such great energy there. I enjoyed every single moment of it. I felt that I was home. It is a brilliantly simple idea. Take a teenaged J-pop trio, introduce them to the joys of heavy metal, and you have a way of combining the cuteness of Japanese kawaii culture, such as perky choreographed dance routines, matching outfits and bright smiles, with the fantastical imagery, pummelling riffs and unrelenting darkness of metal. It is the kind of thing that festival audiences love, not least because Babymetal do it all with a perfectionist but tongue-in-cheek charm. Over an entire concert, however, the limitations of the Babymetal schtick were laid bare. The three young, female members of the band, in outfits that fell somewhere between Xena, Warrior Princess and the Sugar Plum Fairy, let out painful shrieks for Gimme Chocolate! BABYMETAL headlined London's Hammersmith Apollo this past weekend, and Jennifer McCord was on hand to capture all the action.

It has been an interesting past year for Babymetal. While continuing to tour relentlessly after the success of their sophomore effort Metal Resistance, the group was hit by the departure of Yui Mizuno in late 2018 due to undisclosed health reasons, and the core group reverted to a duo of Suzuka Nakamoto and Moa Kikuchi. However, this setback wasn’t to hold them back for long and in 2019 album number 3, Metal Galaxy, was released to critical acclaim and a more evolved and defined sound. Now in the middle of a world tour to support the album, the group descended on the hallowed Hammersmith Eventim Apollo along with horror punks Creeper for a night of sheer bedlam. Opening the night, Creeper [8] had a loud and dedicated portion of the crowd supporting them as they powered through their set, with a sound moving between AFI, My Chemical Romance and The (International) Noise Conspiracy. They put on a great live show in a set dominated by their first album Eternity, In Your Arms rather than any rarer cuts from the early EPs, although they did show off a new track in “Annabelle”, which is set to appear on this year’s Sex, Death and the Infinite Void. Frontman Will Gould had tons of energy, bounding around the stage in all black while the rest of the band, in white suits, kept going like a well oiled machine, with particular praise going to the drumming of Dan Bratton. It is pretty clear from this showing why Creeper are seen as one of the rising stars of British rock right now. However, there were still some parts of the crowd, particularly in the more metal leaning sections, that didn’t quite warm to them. It’s to be expected, given the difference in style that Creeper offer compared to the night’s headline act, and although their performance may not convince everyone to go out and buy their music, their live show will certainly have won over some fans. However, the act that everyone was here for was still to come. With all the lore and theatre that has become a trademark of their live shows, Babymetal [10] burst onto the stage with full force as they break into an opening salvo of “DA DA DANCE” and “Gimme Chocolate!”. With a huge screen behind them to help illustrate the lyrics, the visuals are a sight to behold, whether it be the bright lights, tightly choreographed dance moves, pyrotechnics or just the bizarre sight of thousands of CGI RoboCop-esque Joakim Brodéns (of Sabaton fame) Russian dancing to “Oh! Majinai”. It really feels like Babymetal have taken inspiration from Rammstein’s mantra of “if you can do it, overdo it” and it really adds an extra layer of entertainment to proceedings. Performance wise, Nakamoto and Kikuchi are as on form as ever, accompanied by tonight’s Avenger, Momoko Okazaki, who feels as much a part of the band as the core duo. The Kamis of the West are also on point, with some impressive solos in the intro to “Kagerou” and all the energy to match the girls in front of them. Being a tour in support of the new album, the setlist is dominated by tracks from Metal Galaxy, although old favourites such as “Megitsune”, “KARATE”, “Road of Resitance” and “Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!” are still in the mix. It is a slight disappointment that songs such as “Doki Doki ? Morning” and “The One” didn’t make the cut, but when acts get to their third album they do have to start making difficult set choices. Nevertheless, everyone involved with Babymetal knows exactly what to bring to every concert and I don’t think anyone can leave disappointed with what they got. The question now is, after they’ve finished conquering the Metal Galaxy, where will the Fox God take them next?

Fresh off a UK tour with BABYMETAL, Creeper have dropped a video for their new track Cyanide – taken from upcoming album Sex, Death & The Infinite Void. It’s the third track to be released from Creeper’s forthcoming second album – due for release on May 29 on Roadrunner Records – following on from Annabelle and Born Cold. Speaking exclusively to Kerrang!, frontman Will Gould says the song is “about obsession, about forbidden love, the sort of love that makes it feel like time is stopping,” describing it as “apocalyptic romanticism.” You’ve just finished a tour with BABYMETAL. How on Earth was that? “The BABYMETAL tour was such a fantastic experience. Creeper always stands out on support bills, but the BABYMETAL crowd seemed to really take to us. The girls from BABYMETAL were very kind and generous to us too, we really enjoyed ourselves.” What can we expect from your own upcoming headline shows this April? “This is our first headline tour since we returned so you can expect quite the spectacle. We will have our friends Wargasm and Holding Absence in tow too – it’s going to be something very special.” You like to tease your fans and keep them guessing. Should we be keeping our eye out for more cryptic trickery? “With Creeper you should always expect the unexpected, our most dedicated fans get the most out our band by remaining extremely vigilant!” Is that mystique still an important facet of what Creeper are about? “Absolutely, one of our main goals with Creeper was to put the magic back into rock music. I have spent years giving my all to the magic and mystery of this band, it is extremely important to us!” If you had one message for Creeper fans before they first listen to Sex, Death & The Infinite Void, what would it be? “I would simply ask that they expect the unexpected; that they lit some candles and lay down and listened to it in it’s entirety. After all that was the way it was intended!” After summer festivals are wrapped up, what is the plan for the rest of the year “We have so many plans, but they are too secret at the moment! What I can say is that we hope to perform all over the world on this campaign.” Sex, Death & The Infinite Void is released on May 29 via Roadrunner Records.
