Simon Cowell was left gobsmacked on tonight’s Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions when the new savage voting system meant that favourites Paul Potts and Connie Talbot were eliminated. There’s bound to be some upset over the next five weeks, with firm favourites from the show’s 13 year history coming back to compete against each other. But in a change to the traditional BGT public vote, it wasn’t down to viewers at home over who got through. To determine the two acts through to the next round, the audience at Wembley Arena were able to vote for their favourite acts instead. On top of that, only one judge a week got a golden buzzer – with this week Amanda Holden getting her shot and sending someone straight through to the final. Ukraine’s Got Talent star Kseniya Simonova earned Amanda’s automatic ticket to the final with her heartbreaking performance and artistry, telling the story of a cancer survivor using sand drawings. Daredevil duo Bello and Annaliese Nock from America’s Got Talent earned the audience vote after stunning them with their panic-inducing routine on a 50ft ‘wheel of death’ without a safety net.

The second semi-final of Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions will see judge Simon Cowell reunited with MerseyGirls star Julia Carlisle, after paying £175,000 for the dancer’s back surgery in 2017. After the dance troupe first performed for the Britain’s Got Talent judges two years ago, Julia revealed that she was stricken with scoliosis and desperately needed money for surgery, as NHS procedures for the condition meant running the risk of never dancing again. Now, two years after her life-changing operation, Julia made a triumphant return to the stage for the second semi-final of The Champions spin-off, where she and the rest of the MerseyGirls competed against Scottish crooner (and former winner) Jai McDowall and the 100 Voices of Gospel choir. In an emotional moment, on Saturday viewers will see Simon and Julia tearfully reunited, with both giving heartfelt dedications to one another.

Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions viewers were left seething after Jai McDowall missed out on a spot in the final. The 33-year-old singer returned to the Britain’s Got Talent stage after winning the fifth season back in 2011, performing a stunning rendition of I’ll Never Love Again. It was a performance which saw judge Simon Cowell forced to confront the star after he previously stated he was ‘disappointed’ Jai won the competition. Speaking to Jai, Simon said: ‘So, 2011. I remember my issue at the time was I was struggling to find out where you fit into the market. ‘The fact that I never gave you support during or after the show and you have the guts to come back and prove a point to me: you’ve grown in stature and in confidence and that was an amazing performance. ‘I owe you an apology for not giving you the support you needed at the time but I also
