The new figure skating season is underway at the Autumn Classic International in Oakville, Ontario. We learned what jumps Rika Kihira will be performing in her short program this year, and that double world champion Evgenia Medvedeva still has a bit of an issue with her double Axel. But on the whole, this was a more than satisfactory first outing for both skaters who have their sights on more honours in 2019-20. Kihira and Olympic silver medallist Medvedeva headlined the last of the three practice groups inside the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Medvedeva landed her triple flip-triple toe loop combination at the start of her short program practice, unlike at the recent Russian test skates. But she stepped out on her double Axel having landed two cleanly before her runthrough before landing the final jump of her short program, a triple Lutz. 2019 Autumn Classic International Sixteen Mile Sports Complex | Oakville, ON September 12-14, 2019 Live Streaming: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 10:00 SENIOR LADIES PRACTICE 12:00 SENIOR ICE DANCE PRACTICE 13:25 SENIOR MEN PRACTICE 14:55 SENIOR LADIES SHORT PROGRAM FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 10:00 SENIOR ICE DANCE PRACTICE 11:15 SENIOR MEN PRACTICE 12:35 SENIOR ICE DANCE RHYTHM DANCE 13:50 SENIOR MEN SHORT PROGRAM 15:35 SENIOR LADIES FREE PROGRAM SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 09:30 SENIOR MEN PRACTICE 11:00 SENIOR ICE DANCE FREE DANCE 12:45 SENIOR MEN FREE PROGRAM

Huge cheers and screams from the crowd as Yuzuru Hanyu takes to the ice in the warm-up for the second practice session at the Autumn Classic International in Oakville, Ontario. The crowd gave his training partner Junhwan Cha a similar reception, but it is the double Olympic champion the crowd have come to see in the his first competition since the World Championships in Saitama where he took silver behind Nathan Chen. Before his runthrough, he performed a quad loop and we'll be hoping for more quads as he prepares for Friday's short program. The 24-year-old suffered with ankle trouble for much of last season and the fans are out in force to see their hero, some armed with Pooh bears.

Rika Kihira laid down a marker for the season with a stunning short program at the Autumn Classic International. Skating last in the second group to 'Breakfast in Baghdad', the 2018-19 Grand Prix Final winner nailed her opening triple Axel before landing a triple flip-triple toe loop combo and a triple loop. Some of the crowd - including plenty of Japanese fans - stood to applaud a superb skate. After a delay and laughter caused by the camera in the 'kiss and cry' falling over, Kihira's score of 78.18 was announced. In second place was double world champion Evgenia Medvedeva whose typically elegant skate was not quite enough to overhaul the Japanese. Wearing a dark blue bodysuit, the PyeongChang 2018 silver medallist started with a triple flip-triple loop combination followed by a double Axel and triple Lutz. The Russian impressed with her interpretation of Muse's 'Exogenesis', but her technical elements score was five points lower than her rival as she received a total of 75.14.
