Prosecutors showed more bloody photos Friday at Pistorius’ murder trial, but this time the South African sprinter — subject of the pictures, taken just after girlfriend Reeva Steencamp was killed — didn’t react by throwing up. Police Col. Schoombie van Rensburg took the court on a tour down the gory trail he found in the apartment that night, but the defense managed to get in some blows.
Police photos of the shirtless, blood-spattered South African sprinter taken after he fatally shot girlfriend Reeva Steencamp revealed a Biblical verse tattooed on his back and the date of his mother’s death inked on one arm. But the first photo unveiled at Pistorius’ murder trial Friday showed him standing forlornly in the garage of his Pretoria home with blood soaking his shorts, socks and prosthetic legs.
Pistorius, who vomited earlier when a forensics expert described in graphic detail how Steenkamp died and when a photo of the slain woman was shown in the courtroom, did not lose his lunch when these images flashed across the screen.
Pictures taken at the scene are shown in North Gauteng High Court during the trial of Oscar Pistorius for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp on March 14.
Police used lasers to track the path of the bullets that Oscar Pistorius fired through a door, killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, a ballistics expert testified Tuesday. Then they checked his height with and without his prosthetic legs, Police Capt. Christian Mangena said. He was on the verge of revealing his conclusions when time ran out and court adjourned for the day.
He had time to say that the height of the four bullet holes in the door ranged from 93.5 cm to 104.3 cm above the floor. Without his prosthetic legs on, the double amputee runner's elbow height is 96 cm, Mangena said as the 12th day of the Pistorius murder trial came to an end. The runner maintains that he was not wearing his prosthetics when he killed Steenkamp, and after suggesting at his bail hearing last year that he was wearing them, the prosecution conceded last week that he was not.
Pistorius listened to much of Tuesday's testimony impassively, but covered his face with his hands and stuffed his fingers in his ears when Mangena talked about needing to see Steenkamp's dead body as part of his investigation. "I have to see the position of all the injuries sustained," the 20-year police veteran said, before leafing through photos of bullet holes in the black sleeveless top she was wearing, her face, and injuries to her body.
Oscar Pistorius' girlfriend was standing in a toilet cubicle and facing the closed door when she was hit in the right hip by the first of four bullets that he fired, a police ballistics expert testified Wednesday at the double-amputee runner's murder trial.
Reeva Steenkamp fell back onto a magazine holder in the cubicle and crossed her arms over her head to protect herself, said Capt. Christiaan Mangena. The second bullet missed Steenkamp and ricocheted off the wall and broke into fragments, bruising her back, he said.
Steenkamp was then hit in her right arm and in the head by the third and fourth shots fired by Pistorius with his 9 mm pistol, he said. She collapsed with her head on the toilet seat, Mangena said. Pistorius says Steenkamp went to use the toilet during the night without him knowing, but prosecutors charge he killed her after a loud argument that caused her to flee and hide in the toilet area. Neighbors have testified to hearing loud screaming before and during the shots being fired.
Oscar Pistorius, cradles his head in his hands as he listens to ballistic evidence being given in the court during his murder trial in Pretoria, South Africa, March 19, 2014.
Mangena, the ballistics expert, concluded that one of the final two bullets fired by Pistorius went through Steenkamp's left hand, which she held over her head, before it penetrated her skull. The policeman said he couldn't determine the order of the last two shots. As Mangena threw his hands up to cover his head in court to re-enact Steenkamp's cowering position, and described details of the head wound, Pistorius put his fingers in his ears in an apparent attempt to block out the testimony.
Mangena said the bullet that struck Steenkamp's skull broke into two fragments, one of which exited her head and struck the wall behind her. The first shot into the right hip broke Steenkamp's hip bone, Mangena said. "I'm of the opinion that after this wound was inflicted, my lady, she dropped immediately," Mangena said, addressing the judge. Steenkamp slumped into a "seated or semi-seated position" on top of the magazine rack in the cubicle, where she was hit another two times, he said.
The two-story, three-bedroom, three-bathroom home normally could fetch up to $700,000. But Oscar Pistorius’ notoriety — he’s currently on trial for his girlfriend’s bloody shooting — could affect the price. Also, one bathroom will have to be gutted since it’s where the woman was killed.
For sale: well-appointed Silver Woods Country Estate home on outskirts of Pretoria, overlooking a golf course, master bath needs major work. Fallen Olympian and accused murderer Oscar Pistorius is selling his home, also known as the crime scene of his girlfriend’s murder, to pay for his mounting legal bills. His family confirmed Thursday they were selling the mansion before the 14th day of the South African spinter’s murder trial got underway.
“It has become necessary to sell Mr. Pistorius' home in the Silver Woods Country Estate in Pretoria in order for him to raise the necessary funds to cover his increasing legal costs,” his family’s lawyer, Brian Webber, said in a statement. “This is due to the unexpected extension of the trial beyond the initial three-week period for which it was originally set down.” Pistorius, his family said, has not been back to his pad since the Valentine’s Day 2013 tragedy. “Mr. Pistorius cannot contemplate ever returning to live there again,” Webber said.
A week before her violent death, Reeva Steenkamp was on the arm of her boyfriend Oscar Pistorius, smiling as the cameras focused on South Africa’s hottest new couple. But soon after they left the sports awards event on February 7, she sent him a now-chilling message: “I can’t be attacked by outsiders for dating you AND be attacked by you, the one person I deserve protection from.”
Ms Steenkamp’s phone records have revealed how she told Pistorius that while she tried her best to make him happy and not “rock the boat”, she was fearful of his increasingly frequent “tantrums”. “I’m scared of u sometimes and how u snap at me and of how u will react to me,” Ms Steenkamp wrote to Pistorius on January 27, 2013, via the WhatsApp messaging service on her iPhone. “You make me happy 90% of the time and I think we are amazing together … But I’m also the girl that gets side-stepped when you are in a shit mood.”
The following are WhatsApp message exchanges between Oscar Pistorius (OP) and Reeva Steenkamp (RS), as read in court Monday during the athlete's murder trial.
January 27, 2013:
RS to OP: I'm not 100% sure why I'm sitting down to type you a message first but perhaps it says a lot about what's going on here. Today was one of my best friend's engagements and I wanted to stay longer I was enjoying myself but it's over now. You have picked on me incessantly since you got back from CT (Cape Town) and I understand that you are sick but it's nasty. Yesterday wasn't nice for either of us but we managed to pull through and communicate well enough to show our care for each other is greater than the drama that attacked us. I was not flirting with anyone today. I feel sick that you suggested that and that you made a scene at the table and made us leave early. I'm terribly disappointed in how the day ended and how you left me. We are living in a double standard relationship where you can be mad about how I deal with stuff when you are very quick to act cold and offish when you're unhappy. Every 5 seconds I hear how you dated another chick. You really have dated a lot of people yet you get upset if I mention ONE funny story with a long term boyfriend. I do everything to make you happy and to not say anything to rock the boat with u. You do everything to throw tantrums in front of people. I have been upset by you for 2 days now. I'm so upset I left Darren's party early. SO upset. I can't get that day back. I'm scared of you sometimes and how u snap at me and of how you will react to me. You make me happy 90% of the time and I think we are amazing together but I am not some other bitch you may know trying to kill your vibe. I am the girl who let go with u even when I was scared out of my mind to. I'm the girl who fell in love with u and wanted to tell u this weekend. But I'm also the girl that gets sidestepped when you are in a s**t mood. When I feel you think u have me so why try anymore. I get snapped at and told my accents and voices are annoying. I touch your neck to show u I care and you tell me to stop. Stop chewing gum. Do this don't do that. You don't want to hear stuff cut me off. Your endorsements your reputation your impression of someone innocent blown out of proportion and f***ed up a special day for me. I'm sorry if you truly felt I was hitting on my friend Sams husband and I'm sorry that u think that little of me. From the outside I think it looks like we are a struggle and maybe that's what we are. I just want to love and be loved. Be happy and make someone SO happy. Maybe we can't do that for each other. Cos right now I know u aren't happy and I am certainly very unhappy and sad. OP to RS: Please let me know when I can call you RS to OP: I'm here OP to RS: I want to talk to you. I want to sort this out. I don't want to have anything less than amazing for you and I. I am sorry for the things I say without thinking and for taking offense to some of your actions. The fact that I'm tired and sick isn't an excuse. I was upset that you just left me after we got food to go talk to a guy and I was standing right behind you watching you touch his arm and ignore me. And when I spoke up you introduced me which you could've done but when I left you just kept on chatting to him when clearly I was upset. I asked Martin to put on that Kendrick Lamar album in the car and don't know it. Granted that it was a s**t song but you should've just lent forward and whispered in my ear to change it seeing as I had to drive to pick up your friend. I was 30 minutes late and I know you don't like it when I drive fast but then you could've asked Gina to drive herself so that we wouldn't have to. When we left I was starving the only good I had had was a tiny wrap and everyone was leaving for lunch. I'm sorry I wanted to go but I was hungry and upset and although you knew it, it wasn't like you came to chat to me when I left the table. I was upset when I left you cos I thought you were coming to me. I'm sorry I asked you to stop tapping my neck yesterday, I know you were just trying to show me love. I had a mad headache and should've just spoken to you softly. In sorry for asking you not to put on an accent last night pretty much the same and didn't have the energy.
