Wildcard Misaki Doi has won her only previous match with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. She was 6-7(3), 6-4, 3-1 when the Russian had to retire in Wuhan 2016.
Pavlyuchenkova, a finalist in 2017, has beaten Dayana Yastremska and Kiki Bertens to reach the last eight – just the fourth time in 2019 she has won consecutive matches.
WTA World No.36 Yulia Putintseva has a perfect 3-0 winning record against Naomi Osaka. Her two 2019 victories both came on grass – in Birmingham and at Wimbledon – but she also won their clash in Hobart in 2018. She has not lost a set to the two-time major winner.
Osaka has won eight of her last 10 matches against players ranked between 20 and 40 on the WTA Ranking.
Camila Giorgi and Elise Mertens have never played previously.
The Italian has won 11 of her last 14 singles matches since Wimbledon, while Mertens is in action for the first time since pushing eventual winner Bianca Andreescu to three sets at the US Open.
