You can’t have Cinderella without the Fairy Godmother – and Billy Porter is apparently in pole position to take on the famous role. Sony Studios are producing a musical re-imagination of the fairy tale based on an original idea by James Corden, with Camila Cabello already attached and expected to play the titular character. Kay Cannon, who directed Blockers and wrote the three Pitch Perfect movies, is already in place to both direct the film and pen its script. The project is still in the very early stages of development, but producers are already moving forward with the casting process – with Porter firmly in their sights for a big role. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pose star Porter is in negotiations to play the Fairy Godmother in the forthcoming film. The link comes just a few weeks after the actor and stage performer became the first openly gay black man to win an Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category for his work on Pose. Porter, 50, began his career in theatre, appearing in such Broadway shows as Grease, Kinky Boots, Smokey Joe’s Cafe and Five Guys Named Moe. Even though this is technically a Cinderella movie with Camila Cabello starring in (cue Lady Bird audio) the titular role, let this be henceforth known, unofficially, as Billy Porter‘s fairy godmother movie — because Billy Porter is in negotiations to star as the fairy godmother in Cinderella. Adding more magic to this already fabulous musical film adaptation of the Cinderella folk tale, Idina Menzel is looking to join the mix as the evil stepmother, Evelyn, EW has learned. (Get it? Evil stepmother is named Evelyn.) A rep for Sony declined to comment.

She has no Ryan to her Sharpay, but Camila Cabello silently belts out High School Musical 2's "Fabulous" in her bathrobe with enough passion to cover both roles in a clip posted on social media in the wee hours of Saturday morning (Oct. 19). http://instagram.com/p/B3yc9wYJ2tG "Welcome to adulthood everybody," she captioned the video, which begins with the tune's announcement that "Everything's got to be perfect for me!" By the time Cabello gets to the outro of the chorus -- "This won't do, that's a bore/ That's insulting, I need more/ I need, I need, I need, I need/ I need, I need, I need fabulous" -- she has what appears to be a water bottle in hand, in the place of a mic, and is practically on the floor in a moment of pure dramatic flair.

In what may be a comforting sign for movie fans, and especially out-of-work actors, Sony's Cinderella movie starring Camila Cabello in the title role will reportedly start shooting again after initially shutting down production due to COVID-19.
Deadline reports that the film, directed by Kay Cannon, will once again resume filming, starting with low-level shooting outside of London, as those working on the movie feel like things are structured well enough that they're comfortable picking up where things left off. Shooting will begin later this week, and will stretch through the end of September.
Actors returning to the set include Cabello, Minnie Driver, Idina Menzel, and Pierce Brosnan, among others.
Deadline also reports that enhanced safety procedures are in place that will allow for extensive testing to be conducted through the movie's completion. Some of these now-familiar procedures will include: social distancing, contact tracing, "thorough daily disinfection," and adherence to rules put in place by the locals.
Actors/crew are said to be lodged up in separate apartments, and rehearsals have been conducted with that same group donning masks until actual filming is set to take place.
Luckily enough for those putting together the film, the scenes involving big crowds are said to have wrapped prior to COVID shutting things down. What's still left is mainly exterior scenes taking place in "several towns and castles." Production has gone on despite separate departments not intermingling, and also with less crew members around for filming. Not to be overlooked, the buffet has also been nixed in favor of individually distributed food that's already been wrapped/boxed up.
This, of course, sounds like a massive pain in the ass, but has been deemed necessary to get the movie biz up and running again.

Kay Cannon's upcoming Cinderella movie departs from the original story in one major way. The director took to Instagram on Sunday to share a pic from set of stars Camila Cabello and Idina Menzel, revealing that "there are no villains in this movie." The actresses smile wide in the pic, bundling up in large coats to snap a pic with their director. Cabello shared the post on her Instagram Story, writing, "I love this film so much. #Cinderella." http://instagram.com/p/CFotNhjnsH3 @shanny.mc for the win! Revelling the time I have left shooting w/ Cinders, @camila_cabello & her NOT evil stepmother, @idinamenzel (there are no villains in this movie. ❤️) @cinderellamovieofficial #cinderella #director #writer #filmmaking #jokesandsongs A post shared by Kay Cannon (@kaykaycannon) on Sep 27, 2020 at 3:07am PDT ET confirmed on Aug. 17 that production was preparing to safely resume filming on Cinderella in the U.K. The film initially started shooting in mid-February, but halted a month later, in mid-March, due to the coronavirus outbreak. http://instagram.com/p/CFl0y-AnOMY The project is Cabello's feature film acting debut. It's written by James Corden, who also stars alongside Billy Porter, Idina Menzel, Pierce Brosnan, Minnie Driver and Missy Elliott. In an interview with ET last November, Menzel teased her role as "something that sort of encapsulates all the different facets of who I am as a performer." "It's just exciting," she added with a smile. A month later, Cabello dished on how involved she was in the project. "[I'm] super involved. I'm writing songs for it, and it's a really collaborative effort to putting the movie together," she told ET. "I'm so excited! Kay Cannon is the director. She's absolutely incredible and so talented and I think the whole team is such a joy." "I'm excited for the opportunity," she added. "It's really amazing."
