Katherine, Duchess of Kent, is one of the lesser known of the British royals. However, she has been incredibly influential to the history of the royals. Close to the Queen, Katherine, Duchess of Kent, converted to Catholicism. This made history, as she was the first royal to convert since the Act of the Settlement in 1701. This act made it so only Protestant Christians could ascent to the throne, and any royal who married a Catholic would be disqualified. Katherine, now 86, is a cousin by marriage to the Queen, having wed her first cousin Prince Edward, Duke of Kent. Born into the aristocracy, her father was Sir William Arthington Worsley, 4th Baronet. She received very little in the way of formal education, having only two qualifications. However, she is an accomplished musician. Katherine was proposed to by Prince Edward with a sapphire and diamond ring, and they married in an unusual location, York Minster. She wore a stunning white silk gauze dress by John Cavanagh, who three years later created Princess Alexandra’s dress. The bride wore the Kent Diamond and Pearl Fringe Tiara, which was recently worn by Lady Gabriella Windsor on her wedding day.
