Sweden and Canada have asked Olympic organisers to move what is expected to be a hotly-contested women's gold-medal soccer match on Friday at Tokyo's Olympic Stadium to later in the day to avoid the sweltering heat of the Japanese summer. Trackside temperatures at the athletics stadium hit 40 degrees earlier this week, and with the women's medal game due to take place at 1100 local time (0200 GMT), both sides have expressed concerns for player welfare. "I myself have been in contact with (soccer governing body) FIFA today and written to them, so that's about where the situation is today," Marika Domanski Lyfors, the head of Sweden's women's team, told reporters. "It is primarily about the players' health we're thinking about and trying to change the time of the game. There's a pretty big difference between playing in the afternoon or evening, and we are very much exposed to the warmth and heat," she said. The Swedish Football Association (SvFF) said it had also written to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) together with Canada to see if the game could be moved. "If we have to play at 11 o'clock in the morning then we are prepared, but it would clearly be much better to for the performance and the game to have the possibility to play it later. Canada have exactly the same opinion," Domanski Lyfors said. (Reporting by Philip O'Connor; Editing by Shri Navaratnam)

Tareg Hamedi loses gold medal after knocking opponent out cold | Tokyo Olympics | NBC Sports The final bout of karate’s Olympic debut seemed to have everything that makes combat sports so fascinating, right down to an incredible ending that should have made fans for more of a martial art fighting for a place on future Olympic programs. Instead, the gold medal match in men’s over-75 kilogram kumite ended with a messy, confusing penalty for a kick that was apparently too spectacular for karate. Established champion Sajad Ganjzadeh faced up-and-coming star Tareg Hamedi for a gold medal at the iconic Budokan. The karatekas even represented Iran and Saudi Arabia, two nations with an extraordinarily complex history. Hamedi built a lead in the opening minute before launching the spectacular final strike of the Tokyo tournament, connecting exquisitely on a pure left-footed kick to Ganjzadeh’s head and upper body. Hamedi launched the Iranian champion backward and left him unconscious on the tatami, his eyes staring vacantly upward. Hamedi did a celebratory hop and let loose with a scream after apparently winning the first gold medal in Saudi Arabia’s entire Olympic history. It was a cinematic end to the biggest international showcase in the competitive history of karate, which fought for 50 years to get on the Olympic stage. The final medals are being awarded in the closing ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics, wrapping two weeks of competition overshadowed by Covid-19. Team USA won more gold medals -- and more medals overall -- than any other country in the Games. A total of 626 athletes competed for the USA at the Tokyo 2020 games, clinching 39 gold, 41 silver and 33 bronze medals for a grand total of 113 medals in 28 different sports. Overall, 257 members of Team USA won a medal, including 164 women and 93 men. China and Japan, the host-country, were closest to matching the American gold-medal haul, winning 38 and 27 medals, respectively. The battle for most gold medals came down to the final day of competition, as Team USA's wins in women's volleyball and women's basketball pushed the country to the top of the chart.
