Papadakis and Cizeron bid to regain crown World champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron are seeking to continue their ice dance dominance. Having missed last year's event due to a back injury for Cizeron, the French duo have been peerless ever since and rewrote the record books at the NHK Trophy a fortnight ago. They ran through their 1980s-inspired Fame short program with new costumes - the main change being Cizeron's bright green top instead of the open-neck pink number from earlier in the season. Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier are competing in their first Grand Prix Final for five years. The Canadians won Skate Canada and were second behind world silver medallists Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov at the Rostelecom Cup. Gilles' labradoodle dog Scout hasn't made the trip to Turin, but the pair are looking forward to trying to better their fifth place from 2014-15. The pairs skaters were the last on the ice with Aleksandra Boikov and Dmitrii Koslovskii impressing in their session. The Russians boast the highest total of the season, achieved in their victory at the Rostelecom Cup, and look set to duel with world champions Sui Wenjing and Han Cong for gold in Turin. The Chinese are unbeaten since taking silver at PyeongChang 2018 behind Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot. Like Boikov and Koslovskii, Sui and Han won both their assignments in this season's Grand Prix series.

Alena Kostornaia led a Russian sweep of the top three positions in the women's short program at the figure skating Grand Prix Finals on Friday, with Olympic champion Alina Zagitova second. The 16-year-old Kostornaia, who's in her first senior season, was the only skater with a clean landing on a triple axel and scored 85.45 points to take the lead ahead of Saturday's free skate. Zagitova scored 79.60 for second after a clean program, though she doesn't have the triple axel in her repertoire. Anna Shcherbakova was third on 78.27. Kostornaia and Shcherbakova have stepped up to the senior level this season, along with Alexandra Trusova, who placed fifth after a fall, finishing just behind fourth-placed Bradie Tennell of the United States. All four of the Russians in the Grand Prix Finals share the same coach, Eteri Tutberidze.

Men Free Skating | ISU GP Finals Nathan Chen retained his Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final crown as Yuzuru Hanyu took silver in an incredible free skate showdown which saw both skaters land five quads. USA's Chen set a new free skate world record of 224.92 and overall record of 335.30, beating his marks set at March's World Championships in Saitama. Skating to music from the Elton John biopic 'Rocketman', the 20-year-old landed a quad flip, quad Lutz, quad Salchow and two quad toe loops, one in combination, on his way to a third straight Grand Prix title. Double Olympic champion Hanyu also landed five quads, including the quad Lutz for the first time in competition since 2017. The Japanese skater, celebrating his 25th birthday, appeared to give absolutely everything to his performance and collapsed to the ice after his final pose. He was awarded a score of 194.00 and the silver medal.

Frenchman Kevin Aymoz carried his momentum from the short program into the free with an elegant skate which earned him a personal best score and bronze. Making his Grand Prix Final debut in Turin, the 22-year-old punched the air after finishing his performance, obviously delighted with what he'd achieved. And he screamed with delight in the 'Kiss and Cry' upon receiving a score of 178.92, a personal best, before crying tears of joy.
