Taylor Swift got into the spirit of the season on Sunday night. Just days after premiering her new holiday song, “Christmas Tree Farm,” Swift took the stage to perform the tune for the first time — singing it live to London’s O2 arena during her set at Capital FM’s Jingle Bell Ball. It was one of nine songs reportedly included in her set, according to video shared by Capital FM. She also treated the crowd to “You Need to Calm Down,” “Lover,” “ME!” and “London Boy,” all off of her latest album. Other songs included hits “Blank Space,” “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” “22,” and “Shake It Off.” For “Christmas Tree Farm,” Swift dressed up her white romper and thigh-high boots with a red hat. Her stage was lit with red and green lights and snowflake graphics. Swift’s video for “Christmas Tree Farm” — which features nostalgic home footage of Swift and her brother Austin, filmed by their parents during their childhood holiday celebrations — also played in the background.

Swift released “Christmas Tree Farm” on December 6th, just five days after coming up with the idea for the song. The first video in the new behind-the-scenes clip is dated December 1st and finds Swift filming herself at a piano as she picks out a few chords and sings some scattered lyrics. “So, the idea I have for the song is ‘Christmas Tree Farm,’ because I grew up on one,” she says, adding moments later with slight laugh, “It’s about how you’re in the city and you’re stressed out and your life is feeling really low, but in your heart is a Christmas tree farm.” The following day, Swift was in the studio fleshing out the lyrics and melody with producer Jimmy Napes and laying down her vocal track. The day after that, the finishing touches arrived in the form of a small group of singers who provided the song’s choral vocals. Swift released “Christmas Tree Farm” along with a music video featuring some of her childhood home movies. This year, she also released her new album Lover and starred in the film adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats, collaborating with Webber on original songs for the film, including “Beautiful Ghosts.”

Taylor Swift famously grew up on a Christmas tree farm so she knows a thing or two about holiday decorations. Or so we thought before she hopped on “Lover,” the title track for her seventh album, and bragged about leaving her Christmas lights up until January. Because … doesn’t everybody? Daughter Christmas herself explained the lyric to the New York Times’ “Diary of a Song” and revealed that while writing “Lover” in one whirlwind day, she almost left the lights up for much longer. “I had toyed with the idea of ‘We could leave the Christmas lights up ‘til April,’” Swift said over FaceTime. Okay, now, that’s a long time to have Christmas lights up. A month before Memorial Day? Something tells us Emily Post wouldn’t approve. But ultimately, Swift kept the lyric as “January,” not because it was weird, but because it wasn’t weird. “It’s not about that being a crazy thing,” she continued. “It’s about how mundane it is. It’s about like We could put a rug over there. We could do wallpaper or paint. When young adults go from living in their family to then combining their lives with someone else, that’s actually, like, the most profound thing.” All Taylor Swift wants to do is flip through a West Elm catalogue with her man, Joe Alwyn! Would say that’s relatable, but who among us besides international pop stars can actually afford West Elm?
