When the Duchess of Sussex was introduced to the world as Harry’s fiancée, she spoke glowingly about her charity work and said she was excited to use her newfound platform in the Firm to create change. She also revealed how she felt excited to be able to “focus even more energy on” the causes close to her heart when she married into the Royal Family. But royal author and expert Penny Junor has said Meghan may not have fully understood the restraints imposed on royals in their line of duty. Members of the Royal Family are expected to remain strictly tight-lipped on political matters and when it comes to working with charities, they offer support rather than taking centre-stage themselves. Ms Junor told Express.co.uk: “I would have thought part of the appeal of marrying Harry might have been having a platform for her activism. “But I think probably what she found when she arrived inside the Royal Family was that she couldn’t be as active as she wanted to be. “She couldn’t be as outspoken as she wanted to be. “The Royal Family doesn’t operate in that way, they don’t use their position in order to make change. “They use it to highlight issues and support issues but not to actually drive change. “They are not as powerful as she might have thought they were.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly seeking an extension to their 12-month “Megxit” deal that would allow them to continue as non-working royals in California. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex plan to meet with senior royals over Zoom in January, before Harry travels to the UK — depending on COVID restrictions — to seal the deal, The Sun reported Saturday. Harry and Meghan’s current deal with Buckingham Palace allows them to hold on to their royal patronages, or charity support duties, but is set to expire on March 31. The two are keen to hold on to their patronages, The Sun noted. Meghan’s patronages include organizations that forward women’s empowerment, universal education and animal welfare. Harry’s include his title as president of the African Parks nonprofit conservation charity and the Invictus Games foundation. Harry is also hoping to regain the honorary military posts that were stripped from him during Megxit, The Sun reported. News of the upcoming negotiations comes after Harry and Meghan secured deals with Netflix and Spotify each worth $100 million and $30 million.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex set out their goal to "build a better world" as they effectively launched the website of their non-profit organisation Archewell. On the homepage of the Archewell website is a picture of Diana, Princess of Wales with son Harry on her shoulders, while in another monochrome image a young Meghan stands as her mother Doria Ragland crouches down to hug her daughter. This resulted in many commentators criticising the couple for not including Prince Charles in the picture, despite his own charitable efforts including him setting up the Prince's Trust to help vulnerable people. Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan claimed the message was “shameful” and called for the Queen to remove their titles when their 12-month royal review since stepping down as senior royals arrives in March. Express.co.uk readers were asked between 11.05am and 11pm yesterday whether the Queen should strip the couple of their titles. Out of the 25,488 people who voted, a staggering 23,506 (92 percent) voted yes. Only 1,683 (seven percent) readers were against this. And 299 people (one percent) were not sure. One person wrote: "The USA might enjoy have a Duke and Duchess living on their shores for the novelty of it. "However, when the true cost of their upkeep surfaces, they might think differently. "Monarchy and Hollywood stars are not the same thing."

One year ago, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their decision to step away from royal duty — a departure that would change the royal family forever. "Meghan and Harry took a huge leap of faith to embark on their new life," a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE in this week's cover story. It was a leap that would reshape not just the royal family but the monarchy too. Harry, 36, who long felt marginalized by the role of "spare" in the line of succession—an issue that has plagued generations of royal siblings, including Queen Elizabeth’s sister, Princess Margaret — "finally found a solution," says royal historian Robert Lacey, "which is essentially to get out and start a new life. To stay in the royal system is to go along with subservience to those more senior than you. He has asserted his own identity." This "progressive new role," as the couple described it in their previous statement outlining the change — including earning their own income — offered a fresh start. "It was always their dream to be financially independent and pay their own way," says the source close to the couple. With that dream finally realized, "The year started out with a lot of excitement and anticipation," says a source close to the prince. "Harry was finally doing what he’d wanted to do for years, and to have Meghan and [19-month-old son] Archie with him was all he could have asked for."
