Taylor Swift transforms into “The Man” for her new video. The Grammy-winning performer is unrecognizable as a manspreading, womanizing, boozing, tantrum-throwing male exec for the project, which she directed, stars in and owns — as she proudly notes in the credits. The video, which was released Thursday morning, takes on the patriarchy and includes a not-so-subtle dig at Scooter Braun as well as the voice work of Dwayne Johnson and a cameo by her dad, Scott Swift. Set to lyrics about how it’s still a man’s world, Swift, in character as a male exec, acts like a god to his employees, who applaud when he enters into the room, fist-bumping the other dudes and hang on his every word.

“The Man” is then the world’s worst subway passenger, spreading his legs to hog multiple seats, smoking a cigar (perhaps a dig at Gabrielle Union’s claim about Simon Cowell on the set of America’s Got Talent?), reading a man-centric newspaper (with women relegated to the style section) and obliviously dropping sections on other women. He then gets off — at the 13th Street Station, a nod to her favorite number — and the shade is less subtle. As he urinates against a wall, the graffiti and posters come more into focus. Along with a poster that says, “If found return to Taylor Swift” are names of albums (“1989,” “Red,” “Speak Now”) she made with her former label, Big Machine Label Group, which was purchased by a company owned by Braun last summer — and she was livid about because the music manager, whom she isn’t a fan of, now owns her music. The more direct hit at Braun is a no scooter sign above the Man’s right shoulder. Also, the word “Karma” appears on the center of the wall, which some fans think could be the name of her next album — or another message to Braun. And there’s a Mr. Americana poster starring a “Tyler Swift” and premiering at the “Mandance” festival. (Her doc, Miss Americana, premiered at Sundance last month.)

Taylor Swift is totally unrecognizable as a misogynistic, disrespectful, all-around pretty awful man in her latest music video for “The Man” off of her Lover album. In the video, the singer exhibits some pretty bad (but often standard) behavior as a man: man-spreading on public transit, asking for pats on the back for doing the bare minimum, ballin’ out on a yacht, throwing tantrums during sports and more. Swift embodies her character so fully that it is difficult to figure out if that’s really her under all of those prosthetics (major shout out to the makeup team!). But that’s not the best thing about the music video, which is a direct shot at the double standards that Swift has faced throughout her career. The 30-year-old is known for dropping Easter eggs into her music videos, and this one is no exception. How many are there, you ask? Swift herself told fans on YouTube, “Lots and lots. More than in any kid’s yard on Easter morning.” Just call her the . While The Man is on the train being generally awful to the women onboard, he opens up a newspaper. The story on the front page? In all caps, “What Man Won the Year in Celebrity Dating.” Swift has been open about the scrutiny she’s received for her love life in the past. In the song, Swift sings that, if she were a man, “They’d say I played the field before / I found someone to commit to / And that would be okay / For me to do / Every conquest I had made / Would make me more of a boss to you.” Then, when The Man gets off of the train, he stops to relieve himself on a public wall (ah, the beauty of being able to pee while standing), and that wall has a ton of Easter eggs literally written all over it. First, the station he stops at is 13th street station. 13, as any Swiftie would know, is the singer’s lucky number, and she was born on Dec. 13th.

There Are a Few Allusions to Her Drama with Big Machine Records and Scooter Braun All of Swift’s albums from her time with Big Machine Records are tagged on the wall in graffiti. Some back story for those of you who don’t know: It was announced in June 2019 that former CEO Scott Borchetta sold Swift’s previous label Big Machine (and with it, Swift’s entire catalog of music) to music manager Scooter Braun for $300 million. Swift made her disapproval known, penning a lengthy post in which she made it clear that she did not support Borchetta’s decision.

Taylor Swift fooled nearly everyone in her latest music video (and directorial debut), “The Man,” in which she dressed up as her own male alter ego “Tyler Swift” to demonstrate toxic masculinity in the workplace. http://instagram.com/p/B9FI9t4hkOs It was quite an impressive drag persona, so much so that it was hard to tell at times whether it really was Swift under all that facial hair. Since “The Man” video came out, Swift herself, as well as the video’s makeup artist, Bill Corso, have shed some light on how the hell this transformation happened. In an Instagram post, Corso showed time-lapse photos of Swift’s transformation into The Man and thanked his prosthetics and “muscle suit” team — totaling at least six people — for their hard work on the project. In addition to the muscle suit, Swift had to wear eyebrow wigs and facial sculptures to achieve the full look. The entire process took four to six hours every day of the shoot. http://instagram.com/p/B9Fn4MzDtc3 In her own series of posts thanking the video team, Swift shouted out Corso and his crew for “turning me into a zombie … but convincing a significant amount of people I was a dude is our crowning achievement.” She also noted that she worked with movement coaches Stephen Galloway and Spenser Theberg, who taught her how to walk, slouch, and smoke like her bro character.
