One of the most accomplished tennis players of the last 50 years retired this week. But unlike in other sports, when a retirement announcement sees a flood of tweets from former teammates and competitors, Maria Sharapova’s official goodbye hasn’t led to an outpouring of memories on social media, at least not from many of her peers. Billie Jean King was among the few notables to pay homage, saying Sharapova’s “business success is just as impressive as her tennis achievements.” Nike has plastered Twitter timelines with an ad honoring Sharapova, with text over her face, staring intently into the camera, saying her aggressive nature was a positive and just the thing the game of women’s tennis needed. Aggression isn’t bad. All athletes are aggressive to an extent; you can’t be successful without it. But Sharapova’s style wasn’t just on-court power and the grit needed to play nearly 20 years as a professional despite significant shoulder issues for a stretch. For as beloved as she is in her native Russia, it doesn’t seem she’ll be missed too deeply in the sport.

All of us know about Sharapova’s ‘aggressive-composure’ the professional courts. And at times with tennis treating her hard on the professional surfaces, she has never really lost her cool, and broke or destroyed a racquet. However, she recently revealed that she has broken some racquets during practice sessions. In addition to that, her compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova disclosed about Sharapova’s unseen side. She stated that Maria was always a bit reserved on the WTA Tour. “Thinking about Maria, she was never very open and somebody took it as being arrogant or high-level like kind of lift your nose up. I never thought so of her because I think it’s just her way to defend herself. Having her space because everybody wanted something of her,” she said. “I think she’s a great champion and she did it her way. She played her way, she wins whatever she won and she’s great athlete, a great champion.” The player with an impressive grit Maria Sharapova hung her tennis racquets on Wednesday and bid goodbye to the sport. Former World Number one Maria Sharapova once mentioned that she won’t step on the professional circuit after becoming a mother. She never saw herself being a mother and a tennis player at the same time. Certainly, competing professionally as a mother is one of the challenging tasks in a tennis player’s career. Also, Sharapova aspires to spend maximum time with her child, hence the thought of being a mother and a tennis professional never crossed her mind. Maria Sharapova on her parents “I have a good friendship with my mother, who was very young when I was born. I want to have that kind of relationship with my son too,” she once said. Maria and her father left their home in Russia and flew to the United States to learn professional tennis. At that tender age of six, she was separated from her mother and lived on the other side of the ocean while swinging her racquets. “I wouldn’t know how to do both.. dedicate hours and hours on your body and on your strength and on the court. Those are never the circumstances I wanted to have a child around. That (separation from my mom) definitely influences a lot of decisions that I’ll make in the future,” Maria Sharapova said. “There’s the expression, ‘You make plans and God laughs’, and I really hope he doesn’t laugh. I’ve really had such good relationships with my mother and my dad but I want to give my children a sense of peace and a sense of just home,” the five-time Grand Slam champion said. Last week the Russian tennis ace Maria Sharapova bid goodbye to professional tennis, and for the moment she is also not considering any coaching endeavor of the sport. And she will pay sheer attention towards her other business ventures.

The inaugural match was held at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Rancho Fe, Calif. “I’ve been part of World TeamTennis ever since I was a little girl. It was really the event that gave me the experience that I needed at that age,” Sharapova said. “I remember, leaving WTT, I went on to win a smaller WTA event and it was the beginning of my career. I’ve played World TeamTennis on this court, so good memories to be back here." http://instagram.com/p/B9OHV6VBgt6 Her team consisted of Monica Puig, CoCo Vandeweghe, Ryan Harrison and Mardy Fish. Bob and Mike Bryan were joined by Madison Keys, Taylor Townsend, Sam Querrey and James Blake. Though still a competitive tennis match, the exhibition included some wild moments including when LMFAO singer Redfoo subbed in for Mike Bryan.

Sharapova has recently announced to the world her intention to retire from professional tennis. The beautiful Russian tennis player will leave an indelible mark in the tennis world, but copious injuries have meant that the decision to retire came perhaps a little earlier than expected. During her amazing career, Masha won five Grand Slam titles — two at the French Open and one each at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open, winning 36 titles in total, including the year-ending WTA Finals in her debut in 2004. She also won three doubles titles. In a long interview with New York Times, the former World number 1 talked about her idea of having children: “I have a good friendship with my mother, who was very young when I was born. I want to have that kind of relationship with my son too. I wouldn’t know how to do both.. dedicate hours and hours on your body and on your strength and on the court. Those are never the circumstances I wanted to have a child around. That (separation from my mom) definitely influences a lot of decisions that I’ll make in the future.
