Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, wife of Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, has tested positive for coronavirus, a statement from the prime minister's office says. "She will remain in isolation for the time being. She is feeling well, is taking all the recommended precautions and her symptoms remain mild," it read. The couple is now self-isolating. Mr Trudeau is in good health and has no symptoms, according to his office, but he will remain in isolation for 14 days. There are no plans at present for Mr Trudeau to be tested for coronavirus. "The prime minister will continue to fully assume his duties and will address Canadians tomorrow (Friday)," his office said. There are currently approximately 103 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Canada.

Minister Justin Trudeau discussed the status of his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, who officials confirmed on Thursday had tested positive for COVID-19. Trudeau reiterated that her symptoms were “mild” at this point.
Trudeau said doctors have advised him that until he exhibits symptoms, there is “no value” in him being tested for COVID-19.
Trudeau also looked to reassure Canadians when he said that Canada is in an “enviable position” due to Canada’s “fiscal firepower” in responding to the economic impacts of COVID-19.
The Prime Minister said his government is “not closing the door” when it comes to any and all further possible responses to the global COVID-19 outbreak, but said their decisions would be guided by the “best science.”

Coronavirus comes at you fast. On Mar. 3, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau spoke at a WE Day event and concert in London, United Kingdom. Had the event been scheduled a week later, it would doubtlessly have been cancelled; since it wasn’t, COVID-19 spread undetected across its hundreds of attendees, including the Prime Minister’s wife. After showing symptoms, she tested positive for the virus on March 12. Justin Trudeau, out of an “abundance of caution,” is also self-isolating for two weeks, though there’s been no mention of his test. But what about their children? What about Trudeau’s mother, who attended the conference with her? What about everyone who took a selfie with Sophie, who may pose a risk? American President Donald Trump unilaterally banned many travellers from Europe—except the U.K. But COVID-19 doesn’t respect national borders. As the slogan behind Grégoire Trudeau ironically reminds us, “We are global.” The Prime Minister is in good health with no symptoms. As a precautionary measure and following the advice of doctors, he will be in isolation for a planned period of 14 days. Also on the advice of doctors, he will not be tested at this stage since he has no symptoms. For the same reason, doctors say there is no risk to those who have been in contact with him recently. Today, he held several meetings over the phone. He spoke with the leaders of Italy, the United States and the United Kingdom, he participated in a meeting of the special cabinet committee on COVID-19, he held a meeting with the Minister of Finance on the current economic situation, and he also spoke with the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the President of the Canada Labour Council. Tomorrow, he will speak with the leaders of National Indigenous Organisations and provincial and territorial premiers to take stock of the COVID-19 situation and coordinate our actions to protect Canadians and limit the economic impact on the country. All orders of government will continue to work tirelessly and in close collaboration.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declined to rule out closing the nation's borders to combat the coronavirus pandemic during remarks Sunday. “We have taken some very strong measures and we are not taking anything off the table,’" Trudeau said when asked if he is considering closing off travel from Europe or the U.S., Reuters reported. The fact that the U.S. is stepping its own mitigation efforts “gives us significant things to think about,” Trudeau said. Trudeau made the remarks remotely from his residence, where he has been self-isolated since his wife, Sophie, reported symptoms. Trudeau said that Sophie, who has tested positive for the virus, was “under the weather” and had a headache, but that he and his children were “doing fine,” Reuters noted. The prime minister reiterated that the Canadian government is “considering everything” when asked if officials are considering asking foreign visitors to go into isolation. He also said his government plans to announce new fiscal policies next week to mitigate the virus’s effects on individual Canadians and businesses.
