Francisco Martin is getting comfortable in a hurry on “American Idol.” (See the video below.)
The 19-year-old from San Francisco, who had to be calmed by the judges before his audition several episodes ago, gave a commanding performance in Sunday’s top 40 round.
Martin sang Harry Styles’ “Falling,” won the crowd and got judge Luke Bryan to dance on his chair. Judge Katy Perry teased that she no longer recognized him ― “and that’s a good thing,” she said.
He advanced to the top 20.
Martin is a far cry from the guy who sweated through his introduction weeks ago, when panelist Lionel Richie got up to give him a reassuring hug and Bryan took his pulse. Last week, the “Idol” hopeful forgot some lyrics in the duet competition.
“I like this new Francisco,” Martin said after his star turn on Sunday’s show. “Let’s keep rollin’.”

We’ve hit the Final Judgement on American Idol, wherein the 40 contestants who survived Hollywood week are jetted off to Hawaii for one last performance before judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan chop them down to the Top 20. Host Ryan Seacrest gives us a pre-show announcement to let viewers know these episodes were previously recorded in January, before the current health crisis tightened its grip on the world and halted production on the series. Originally, the two-night Hawaii extravaganza was to air this evening (Sunday, March 29) and Monday (March 30), but the latter ep has been bumped to next week, to buy ABC some time while deciding what can be done about the forthcoming live episodes. This actor-turned-server was too cocky for his own good at his audition this year, but too good not to make it this far. Nick gives us a solid “When I Was Your Man” on stage that he dedicates to his mom, a big Bruno Mars fan. During his final round of critiques from the judges, Lionel tells him, “I went from not liking you to appreciating you. And you’re in our Top 20.” Luke says, “That’s a beautiful full-circle moment for you guys.” Everyone’s a little on edge with Makayla, given that the teenager was about to perform during Hollywood Week but walked off stage and suffered a seizure. And although she pulled it together enough afterward to perform Kacey Musgraves’ “Rainbow” and make it to this round, her rearrangement of Ingrid Andress’ “More Hearts Than Mine” here in Hawaii is not so stellar. The judges inform Makayla that it’s her time to leave the show. Katy softens the blow just a little by saying, “And by the way, you are the strongest person here.” Thanks? DeWayne’s song of choice is Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road.” He embodies his inner rock star when he struts out on stage with maximum confidence in a black hat. The performance is so good that Lionel springs up from his seat to dance. Before the Pensacola native walks away from the mic, he gives a slight tip of the hat toward the judges. “I think he just played us,” Katy says happily. “He knew his audience. He played us.” Needless to say, DeWayne makes the Top 20.

Two years after winning Alice Cooper's Proof is in the Pudding, Amelia Joyce is competing again. But this time, it's on a much larger stage.
Following in the footsteps of another Arizonan, Joyce has made it to the top 40 contestants on season 18 of "American Idol." She'll be on the episode that airs at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 5, on ABC.
Longtime viewers of the reality singing competition show might recall that Jordin Sparks of Glendale won season 6 of "Idol" not long after winning Proof is in the Pudding, an annual Phoenix talent contest Cooper hosts to spotlight up-and-coming artists in the Valley.
It's a path Sparks forged. But it's not one where Joyce feels entirely at home.
The 23-year-old clearly has what it takes to compete on a national stage. It was evident during the 2017 finals for Proof at the Van Buren. And it was clear during her "Idol" audition, where she delivered a soulful reading of the Beatles classic, "Yesterday."
Still, it's not what she would ever call her natural environment.
"I'm definitely not, you know, a competition kid," she says. "I never saw myself doing 'American Idol.' Or any competition. I just never did."
That Proof is in the Pudding contest was, in fact, the first time Joyce had ever done a music competition, and she's still not sure how comfortable she is subjecting what she does to that entire process.
"Art is a subjective thing," Joyce says. "It's so deeply personal to each person. It's woven into the fabric of who we are. My music is inseparable from my sense of self. And you put all these artists together in a room and then say, "OK, sing for your life and act natural."
Once she decided to try out for "Idol," she reached out to Cota and other local artists with "Idol" experience, including Callie Young, a 2019 contestant who's also appeared on "The Voice."
"I wasn't sure what to expect," she says. "And so, I tried to glean as much experience as I could from other local people who've tried out."

When it comes to being a mom, Katy Perry is getting plenty of practice.
In an exclusive clip of Sunday’s episode of American Idol, fans got an inside look at what the “Part of Me” singer, 35, will be like once she becomes a parent this summer.
After what seemed like a jaw-dropping performance from Idol contestant Kimmy Gabriela, Perry was quick to share her own thoughts.
“She needs to pick better songs,” Perry told fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. “She doesn’t hold the room.”
The next day, Gabriela said she felt “scared” going into her judgment day with the judges.
“I just have this really weird gut feeling things aren’t going to go the way I want it to go,” she told cameras.
Meanwhile, Perry reflected on her judging techniques — and her motherly instincts.
