She’s lived and breathed music since receiving that devastating “no” from the “American Idol” judges two years ago after the third round of Hollywood week. Now, Michigan’s Genavieve Linkowski has made it past that point and is just one song away from the hit reality singing competition’s finals. UPDATE: Genavieve Linkowski learns her finals fate after emotional performance.
Her top 40 performance airs tonight at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and on Hulu Live TV. You can also see if Michigan’s Amelia Joyce makes the finals tonight as she is also performing.
Better prepared: Linkowski, 23, who is from Goodrich near Flint, said she went into “Idol” much better prepared this time around after being cut just before the top 40 back in 2018.
“It’s been a couple of years. I’ve been really practicing a lot. I’ve been putting out many new videos on YouTube. I now have a vocal coach, but before that time I would search good warm up techniques and exercises that I could use to practice. My voice has grown in the last couple of years.”
What to do, what not to do: Linkowski says having previous “Idol” experience has also helped her out a great deal during the three intense rounds of Hollywood week.
“There’s small and simple things that make a huge difference. I would take food with me, snacks just in case I missed a meal to get those calories in. It’s crazy, I would sleep sometimes in my eye makeup to save time the next day. It’s funny how big of an impact some of these little things have. Also, when I woke up, I would warm up a lot. These are things I didn’t do two years ago. I did everything I could to keep my energy level up but at the same time, not compromising my work.”
Song choice, song choice, song choice: As many contestants have learned over the years, choosing the wrong song can make or break you. Linkowski says it’s important to practice a lot of music you enjoy singing because you never know how far you’ll get in the competition.
“Winging it is really stupid. As I was practicing for the top 40, I pretty much nailed down my songs. So then I started working on songs for the top 20 if I made it there. My top choice would be “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus. “Oceans” by Hillsong was another big one for me because that is like, my story."

Meet Makayla Phillips: Luke Bryan Thinks This Teen Singer Is The Next Ariana Grande - Top 20
Makayla Phillips is a frontrunner to win season 18 of “American Idol.” This talented teen is a veteran of reality TV. Two years ago she reached the semi-finals of “America’s Got Talent” before being eliminated in the audience vote. She got that far in the competition courtesy of one of the “AGT” judges, Heidi Klum.
Klum had been so taken with Makayla at her audition that she pressed the Golden Buzzer, sending this soft-spoken teenager straight through to the live shows. Watch that moment in the video above. You’ll see how nervous Makayla is before she raises her voice in song. Miraculously all her shyness slips away as she nails her rendition of the Demi Lovato hit “Warrior.”
She sounds like a singer who has been performing for years. Her confidence even overwhelmed head judge Simon Cowell, who was grinning throughout her show-stopping number which ended with the crowd giving her a standing ovation. Before any of the judges could vote, Heidi singled her out for special treatment, using up her one Golden Buzzer. As she explained to Makayla, “I think you’re absolutely incredible. I love the whole package. I love your smile. I love how you project to everyone.”

Sunday evening was supposed to mark the start of this American Idol season’s live shows. But with production suspended due to coronavirus concerns and the just-announced top 20 all sent home to quarantine with their families, the rest of Season 18 is currently in flux.
But fans in self-quarantine still got their Idol fix this weekend, thanks to a two-hour special called American Idol: This Is Me. “It’s Sunday, April 12, and the start of another week of staying home. Thank you for inviting us into your home for this holiday weekend,” said host Ryan Seacrest at the top of the episode, which re-introduced viewers to 10 of this season’s semifinalists.
This Is Me also served as a handy primer for people who are just starting to tune in to Idol, now that they’re stuck at home and needing new feel-good television to binge. Along with recaps of these 10 contestants’ Idol journeys and a few unseen performances (including a fantastic original song audition and a John Mayer Hollywood Week cover by singer-songwriter Franklin Boone, as seen below), This Is Me also caught up with some memorable cast-offs. And that is when we all got to see Doug Kiker’s surprising post-Idol makeover.

If you're like the rest of the nation, you've likely been getting used to new social norms such as Zoom meetings to grab a chat with your buddies or family members. No need to worry, everyone's favorite talent reality show, American Idol, is moving right along with the times, adopting COVID-19 pandemic best practices by continuing its current season in a perfectly quarantine-solid way, filming its top 20 contestants at their own homes and beaming those performances into all our own respective living rooms on Sunday (Apr. 26).
"Using ground-breaking technology, tonight we make Idol history," intoned host Ryan Seacrest. "This is our show like you've never seen it before. One thing stays the same, you vote, you decide.
"We've had to shift the way we made our show," he added. "Idol has the history of making the most of technology. We were determined to make this work, not only for you, but for the top 20."
Seacrest's words were filled with gravity, but when he zoomed in on the judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie (all, of course, from the comfort of their own homes), things became quickly lighter.
Perry showed up on camera dressed fetchingly in a hand sanitizer costume, and described that going through her first pregnancy in a pandemic is interesting to say the least.
Meanwhile, Bryan told the audience, "My family is safe and healthy. I'm really excited for these kids. They're so talented and they deserve to get their career. I'm so thankful for everybody at Idol that we can still pull this show off."
Richie perhaps put things the best by saying, "This is probably the most excited I've been in a very long time because I can actually say I have never done this before in my entire career."
