They went skiing during their school’s Easter break As William and Harry grew up, their Easter break activities shifted. Instead of pony rides, they took the time to participate in one of the royal family’s favorite sports, skiing. In 1994, after Diana and Charles, Prince of Wales separated (they split in 1992 before officially divorcing in 1996), William and Harry spent Easter break skiing with their mom skiing in Lech, Australia, as they’d done years earlier as a family. Below see Harry, Diana, and William decked out in their ski gear on a chair lift. Traditionally, according to Hello!, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh stay at Windsor Castle for Easter. That’s why the pony rides for William and Harry took place there in 1988 because Windsor Castle is the royal residence where Easter festivities have been held. On Easter Sunday, the queen normally attends a church service at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Then she’s been known to spend the rest of the day marking the holiday privately with the royal family.

Prince William having a sister seems unthinkable now, but an explosive interview with Diana, Princess of Wales alleges that Prince Harry's arrival initially disappointed his father. During a meeting with royal biographer Andrew Morton, the princess spoke freely about the bittersweet implications of her second pregnancy. The author included transcripts of their unfiltered conversation in the recent re-release of Diana: Her True Story — In Her Own Words. According to the royal, Harry's birth on September 15, 1984, signaled the start of a downward spiral. "Charles and I were very, very close to each other the six weeks before Harry was born, the closest we've ever, ever been and ever will be," she remembered. "Then, suddenly, as Harry was born, it just went bang, our marriage. The whole thing went down the drain." Diana says that she saw the baby's sex beforehand, but didn't tell Prince Charles since he had "always" hoped for a daughter (in 2015, Charles admitted he was hoping his second grandchild would be girl). "He wanted two children and he wanted a girl," she explained. By keeping the knowledge a secret until the delivery, the letdown came as a complete surprise. She alleges her husband's initial reaction was, "Oh God, it's a boy," followed by, "and he's even got red hair." Luckily, the couple already agreed on his name. In the event of two boys, they had decided to go with William and Henry. "The alternative was Arthur and Albert," Diana explained."No, thank you. There weren't fights over it. It was just a fait accompli." While the princess says that Charles "loved the nursery life," the birth still marked a turning point in their marriage. She told Morton that after Harry's arrival, "something inside me closed off," especially since her husband continued his affair. "By then, I knew Charles had gone back to his lady," Diana said of Camilla. While a new baby brings its own joys and challenges, the princess later attributed the couple's problems to the extramarital affair, not their second son. "There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded," she famously said in her 1995 BBC interview. The two eventually separated in 1992 before divorcing in 1996.

There are plenty of conflicting opinions when it comes to Diana, Princess of Wales, but we can all agree on one essential truth: she loved her two sons fiercely. Critics questioned whether she loathed the press or used them to her advantage. But when it came to Prince William and Prince Harry, there’s a unanimous consensus that Diana cherished her role as a mother most of all. And like so many other mothers, the Princess of Wales doted on her children and expressed her love for them through both her words and actions. For example, she had several sweet nicknames for her eldest, Prince William. It’s true that Diana felt like an outsider in the royal family most of the time. But one way she fit in perfectly was with her use of nicknames. Everyone from Queen Elizabeth to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have nicknames. And the one Diana had for William is so sweet. According to a 2003 Vanity Fair profile, Diana used to call William “D.D.G.,” which stood for “Drop Dead Gorgeous.” Journalist Christopher Anderson reported that not only did Diana think her little boy was handsome, but she also believed he had a lot in common with another heartthrob — John F. Kennedy, Jr. “Diana, who was so keenly aware of her son’s cover-boy potential that she dubbed him D.D.G. (for Drop Dead Gorgeous), also saw the parallels with young Kennedy,” Andersen wrote. “Just two months before her death, she told friends that she hoped William would grow up to share Kennedy’s media savvy.” According to Andersen, Diana said, “I want William to be able to handle things as well as John [F. Kennedy, Jr.] does.” Sadly, Diana didn’t realize that the man she idolized for her son’s future would die tragically a few years after she did. But the Duke of Cambridge did live up to those expectations his mother had of cultivating a decent relationship with the press.

But the Duke of Cambridge did live up to those expectations his mother had of cultivating a decent relationship with the press. Prince William had a few other cute nicknames Besides Diana calling William D.D.G., she also called him Wombat, which William himself spoke about in a 2007 interview. “It began when I was two. I’ve been rightfully told because I can’t remember back that far,” the Duke of Cambridge revealed. “But when we went to Australia with our parents, and the wombat, you know, that’s the local animal…So I just basically got called that. Not because I look like a wombat, or maybe I do.” She was also known to refer to her eldest as Basher Wills for his wild tendencies, especially when he was a toddler. His cheeky personality during childhood also earned him descriptive monikers including “William the Terrible” and “my mini tornado,” as Express reported. Ultimately, nicknames are a sign of affection and familiarity, proving that Princess Diana truly treasured her son and of course thought he was drop dead gorgeous. But we already knew that.

According to The Sun, the series, which is being called Being Me: Diana, “will tell of her mental health battles, eating disorders, unhappy marriage to Prince Charles, and painful childhood.” The outlet says the show is rumored to be going to Netflix and adds, “The series is to use unseen footage from Diana’s speeches in 1990 to 1992 and interviews with people close to her to focus on her inner turmoil just before she and Charles officially split.”
It’s obvious why the royal family wouldn’t be thrilled about the series, and a source shared:
“The royals will refuse to take part as will the Spencer family. William and Harry will be very upset and angry. It’s particularly distressing for Harry because he’s been working with Netflix. At a time when the royals have been dealt a blow with Harry and Meghan leaving, the timing is not good.”
For now, the project hasn’t been completed or sold, so we’re just going to have to stay tuned to see how the royal family responds and if they issue any statements about it.
