Prince Harry's girlfriend Cressida Bonas was said to be in shock after the sudden death of her stepfather Christopher Shaw. The former banker, 76, married Cressida's mother, Lady Mary Gaye Curzon, during the 90s and was one of society's most lavish hosts. Shaw was reportedly found dead on Friday at his rented house in Salisbury, Wiltshire, by his housekeeper. He was said to have been in good spirits after returning from a holiday in Cuba but was taking medication for chronic kidney disease. Friends are said to have been told that he only had 18 months to live. A post mortem examination is to be carried out in due course. His friend David Wynne-Morgan said: "He was unique. "He decided at Eton that he wanted to live like a 19th-century landed aristocrat and he did just that." He fell for Mary Gaye in 1994 and were together for six years - four of them as a married couple. A friend said: "Cressida was five when they got together and 11 when it all went wrong so Christopher would have been a strong presence in her childhood life."

Prince Harry jokes about winning his trek to the South Pole with his team from Walking with the Wounded before apologising to the Australian team. He also praised the bravery and strength of the injured soldiers who took on the challenge with him. Warning: flash photography. Prince Harry has shown a surprising talent for building his own throne – outdoor toilets in the freezing Antarctic. The industrious prince, 29, took the creative lead in constructing intricate designs for his fellow adventurers at the South Pole last month, it was revealed Tuesday, as Harry, the patron of the Walking with the Wounded charity expedition, was reunited with some of the 12 injured servicemen and women and others who spent 13 days with him in the frozen south. The Wire actor Dominic West, though on a rival team of Harry's, said he enjoyed the comfort of the Prince's designs. "They had a flag pole and a loo roll holder that were surrounded by blocks of snow," West, 44, said at the reception. "He must have taken 45 minute to create each one." (Alexander Skarsgard, who was on the trek, took a memorable photo posing on one of the loos.) Explaining how Harry worked, West said the Prince would dig a hole at the chosen spot along with a "platform to squat on. He built these incredible intricate ones. He did art A level [in high school] – you can tell he has the artistic touch." West added, "I'd be sitting there, looking at a beautiful view thinking, 'This is the royal flush!' "

The fourth in line to the throne, who did two tours in Afghanistan, will have to plan ceremonial parades such as Trooping the Colour and Remembrance Sunday plus coordinating official state visits from foreign dignitaries. Prince Harry is more nervous about being desk-bound than he was flying an Army attack helicopter in Afghanistan. Captain Harry Wales, 29, has told his pals “flying a desk” in Whitehall was “a terrifying prospect”. A colleague told the Sunday People: “Staff work is not his greatest strength. He’s more of a field soldier. "That’s why he loved Afghanistan.” But the Eton-educated prince, who has A-levels in art and geography, fears his work will be sent back covered in “red ink” corrections. He is hoping for a good clerk to cover his back. The source said: “Harry joined the Army to lead men in battle, not to sit behind a desk pushing papers. At least Blues and Royals officer Harry’s job will mean he can spend more time with girlfriend Cressida Bonas, 24, although their relationship may be in trouble. One officer who recently finished a staff job said: “Harry will be bored. The hours there are long and as the junior officer in the team he will be the dogsbody. Staff jobs like this can often feel like a punishment.”
