When you are the one named Sailor Moon, you have certain duties to uphold. Serena might be in charge of doing her homework and doing chores, but she must protect the galaxy in her free time. The heroine and her Sailor Scouts have wowed fans for decades with their magical gifts, friendships, and iconic transformations. Now, a new movie is slated to shake up the Sailor Moon canon, and it has revealed its own take on Serena's transformation sequence. The clip has gained traction on social media as the anime fandom caught wind of its redesigned transformation. For those unaware, the sequence is one of the most important in Sailor Moon as the franchise is known for its magical girl evolutions. Back in the day, Serena was crowned a pop culture icon after she first turned into Sailor Moon, and that will be no different with the film Sailor Moon Eternal. The film, which has been delayed to next year, gave a preview of Sailor Moon and Mini Moon transforming. You can watch the clip below, but you might experience deja vu halfway through. After all, the choreography here is borrowed from a past transformation sequence. The biggest differences come in the art style and character close-ups at the end.

Sailor Moon will be returning to anime with two new film projects, and now has shared new stills from the first Sailor Moon Eternal films. Taking the place of the fourth season for Sailor Moon Crystal, the revival anime released a few years back, the Dream arc (or otherwise known as the Dead Moon arc) of Naoko Takeuchi's original manga series will be instead adapted into two films. The first film, Sailor Moon Eternal, was initially planned for a theatrical release this September in Japan, but was unfortunately delayed to next year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. But now that the film is gearing up for a new release in theaters on January 8th next year, with the second film releasing in February, the official Twitter account for the films has released another clean look into Sailor Moon Eternal. These stills shared a peek into a few of the moments from the arc such as Usagi and the others investigating Dead Moon Circus. Check it out: Kazuko Tadano, character designer from the original Sailor Moon anime in the 90s, has returned to provide the new designs for the Sailors, and thus captures both the nostalgic vibe while also giving the series a major anime upgrade for a new generation. But what do you think of these preview images?

The official website for the Sailor Moon franchise revealed on Monday that Momoiro Clover Z and the main cast are performing the theme song "Tsukiiro Chainon" (Moonlight Chainon) for the two-part Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon Eternal (Pretty Guardians Sailor Moon Eternal The MOVIE) anime film project. The site is streaming a video previewing the song. Momoiro Clover Z previously performed the theme songs "MOON PRIDE" and "Gekkō" (Moon Rainbow) for the first two Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal seasons, followed by a version of the "New Moon ni Koi Shite" opening theme song for the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal: Season III anime. The first film was originally scheduled to open in Japan on September 11, but was delayed to January 8, 2021 due to the spread of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Japan. The second film will open on February 11, 2021. The new cast members for the films includes (left to right in image below) Shouta Aoi as Fish Eye, Satoshi Hino as Tiger's Eye, and Toshiyuki Toyonaga as Hawk's Eye. Kazuko Tadano, the character designer for the original Sailor Moon anime, is designing the characters. Kazuyuki Fudeyasu (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure TV anime all five parts, Land of the Lustrous, PriPara) is penning the scripts. Toei is distributing the film. Despite the pandemic. the movie theater business appears to have a pulse in Japan, with a slate of anime movies that have either found some purchase in the box office or have secured definitive release dates this fall and winter. Violet Evergarden: The Movie wrapped up its third week in theaters while Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie Mugen Train and Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal The Movie are waiting in the wings for their own theatrical releases. Release dates have been fluid since the global pandemic started across the entire entertainment industry and anime hasn’t been exempt from that trend. Violet Evergarden: The Movie missed its original April 24th release date before hitting theaters in Japan on September 18th. Since then, it’s grossed 810 million yen (roughly $7.68 million) and maintained its hold on the No. 2 spot in box office sales behind Christopher Nolan’s spy thriller Tenet. The numbers for Violet Evergarden: The Movie are worth noting with another popular anime movie Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba The Movie Mugen Train on track to release in Japan on October 16. Even further down the line is Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal The Movie getting a two-part release on January 8 and February 11 2021. The Sailor Moon movie will be the first movie to come out in the same style as the reboot of a popular magical girl anime from the 90’s. As for anime movies waiting for their theatrical runs, Demon Slayer follows Tanjiro Kamado and his sister Nezuko as they try and find a cure for her demon curse and seek vengeance on the demon that slaughtered their family. The anime, produced by veteran anime studio Ufotable, is known for its top-notch animation and some of the slickest fight sequences to come out that year. The Demon Slayer: Mugen Train movie picks up right where the anime left off following Tanjiro as he battles a powerful demon that claimed a moving train as its own. The Demon Slayer movie managed to avoid the pandemic related production delays that plagued both Violet Evergarden and Sailor Moon, but it still does not have a release date in the US. The Sailor Moon Eternal movie is in murkier territory than both Demon Slayer and Violet Evergarden movies with a release date that is well into the winter in 2021. It joined the large list of movies beset by COVID-19 related delays when its original September 11 release date in Japan was pushed back to January 8. The movie will be released in two parts with the second coming out on February 11. While anime is but a small part of the entertainment industry besieged by COVID-19, the fact that these movies are being released keep a tradition of theater-going alive that many are worried might die out due to the pandemic. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie Mugen Train will release in Japanese theaters October 16 and Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal The Movie will have a two-part release on January 8 and February 11 2021.
